Pronunciation of words is a hot-button issue. Here again, in the video we stumble upon a word that breeds controversy among people, which is “detailed”.
British people tend to stress the first syllable: DEtailed. There is one more option: deTAILED.

First, let me introduce you Project Calm. It rightly deserves its name as most articles are as tranquil as the name of the magazine suggests. My all-time favourites are short entries that I’m sharing (see the images).

Here is the thing about these entries.
Sometimes we encounter the same very word or phrase that it never occurs to us we could ever stumble upon it. Except for some cases.

A more elaborate version in English:


At times you have somewhat a sixth sense that things might go south.
Today I was to participate in a conference. I created a presentation, rehearsed it a few times. I was all set.
When we joined to run the whole thing through, I was told that my slides don’t change and nobody could see my presentation. It led my presentation to be shifted to the time I could no longer participate.
I exerted myself to the utmost extent trying to convert my pptx into an Office ppt, signed in Microsoft and started the whole process all over again. Nothing worked. I was at my wits’ end. All was in vain.
It was decided that I should record it and share my presentation. Thing is that, it appeared to be that I could have done it. I could have done it manually. We just decided it’s not that enticing at the beginning of run through. It’s so stupid. If I understood from the beginning that I could have done it, that would have been a whole different experience and would have made it to the conference.

I have no bandwidths to record my talk and ask for a refund whatsoever.

But that was a lesson to learn.
Listen to yourself. Never give in to someone’s opinion. Especially, if you have put your time and effort in it.

My first ever book club

I was an exchange student back in 2014 (Germany, Erlangen). Once I decided to drop in on a book club which was lead by an American teacher. Occasionally, I tried to take part in it and I remember even getting some credits for it (it wasn't compulsory, but you still gained something).

Thing is, the whole group failed to follow the book (I jogged my memory for the name of the book and drew a blank). We ended up telling stories. There was one I still distinctly remember, which was shared by Sven. His experience had to do with an exchange program similar to Work&Travel that brought him to Australia.
First year after the exchange went by and he got to the same very place in the middle of the desert where some really hostile blocks with guns came to the gasoline station where he worked and forced him to leave. He somehow stood his ground and made till the end of the exchange program safe and sound.
When I asked him if he was on to get back, he made it clear he would come back to the same very gasoline station 🤣

Back to the book club. There was an abundance of topics we went through; things we were talking about were well beyond conventional, which prompted be to take notes. Taking stock of them made me realize how much I've gained and how it enhanced my fluency. I had one more film on my list, which was Броненосец Потемкин; advised by the teacher 😁I never got round to it... I've got to hand it to her amiable demeanor. We all managed to work alongside each other and gained a lot even with little guidance on her side. It's invaluable when a teacher can create an atmosphere so it doesn't get tense and you still have an ability to learn something.

I’d want to elaborate on the “toad” joke. There’s nothing special, just a word pun, but it’s so spot on.

Toads are similar to frogs (they are alike but not the same; biology wasn’t my strongest suit, so you better consult a dictionary;). That’s one thing you need to know. When a vehicle is not functioning properly, it was parked illegally (you name it), it gets towed. Now, let’s have a look at one more thing, toad and towed sound alike: /toʊd/ and /toʊd/, which makes them “punable” enough. You might want to get back and re-read the joke 🙂

To my dismay, I have no go-to destination/spot whatsoever. I’ve been to quite a few places all over the world, but I have grave reservations if I’m going to be back to where I’ve already been before (prices majorly are at play)
Much to my glee, I keep getting back to some nature spots I happened to see before. What is more grounding than the healing energy of nature?
I’ve never been an avid hiker, climber, you name it, but I do find solace even taking tourist routes.

This time when we arrived to Красная поляна, what I found especially exhilarating is the fact that the place was not overrun by tourists at the time. Nobody’s standing on your way, bumping into you, very few lines. You get to see what you want to and just be in the moment.

First time in my life I was that close to the sun (if I can put it like that). We were just so close to the summit I felt the heat penetrating through my dark jeans. It felt as if I was going to get a sunburn wearing them, or a sunstroke.

Being out in the nature is so reinvigorating, it felt like the journey to the place and back took a week instead of one day.

Compound nouns derived from verbs is what we came across in the post right above,

🟡“The city that never sleeps has a lie-in” as the headline goes. 🟡

A lie-in, which originally was a phrasal verb, was hyphenated to become a noun. There is a vast amount of words being modified this way. You will find some of them below.

▫️Rip off: “They were caught ripping off trinkets in souvenir stores.” - rip off is a verb which has to do with stealing.
a rip-off (обдираловка): "The whole trip is a rip-off." - with the help of a hyphen, it is transformed into a noun.

Sometimes it gets to be modified by merging a verb and a particle together. See the examples below.

▫️Left over: "There are some snacks left over after the hike. We might need to get rid of them; the smell is malodorous."
leftovers: "We have some leftovers after the hike."

▫️Black out: "The entire neighborhood was blacked out for the rest of the day." - there was no electricity.
Blackout: "The city experienced a blackout caused by a tornado."

There are cases when the particle goes first:
▫️The coronavirus broke out - > the outbreak of the coronavirus.

To loop you in at first, I’d elaborate a bit on what a thick stonewall of resentment we’ve come to experience from locals in Sochi.

Service-wise everywhere you turn to, the staff invariably refuses to inform you on some basics and fails to explain even where a spot round the corner is and some even start messing up with you. The ones who know me real well tend to say that I’m tactful, so I deliver. It has no rhyme or reason why they do what they do (they meaning the staff)

Just today, in Красная поляна (which I happened to be in awe with, despite all that mess), I went to the information desk to inquire about an ATM and the woman at the desk was mumbling something indistinctly on purpose. I asked her to repeat because I kept on hearing “dorky”. Thing is I didn’t have the faintest idea there was a shopping mall, let alone its name (the internet was patchy as well). Hearing her saying “dorky”, I kept inquiring why would they call a place like that, especially in the area that was once full of foreigners. Did she mean she was acting this way 🤣
In the end, it appeared to be Горки.

Even while on vacay I still gravitate toward a lifestyle that entails a fast pace. Take today, for instance, I seized an opportunity to have a half an hour jog at the gym right before my classes started.

Getting done with work, I went on with sports activities and had a soothing swim. That was healing in a way as I felt so at peace for the entire day.

Quite a few of you know that I’m on vacay. And vacations, in my case, don’t occur sporadically. Back in China and years after I did come up with more off-the-cuff planning, which doesn’t hold to be true now.
Two days before I set off to Sochi the whole packing thing was well underway and I got so little sleep that I couldn’t handle anything. Even the easiest task turned into a slog. I was knackered at worst (and there was no “at best”). I had no bandwidths whatsoever. Now that we’ve been here for two days and all the issues are sorted out, it feels way better.

Возможно вам непонятно почему неделя Дюны растянулась на три :) В чат вошла тишина и логическое завершение растворилось в небытие.

Этому есть несколько причин:
▫️В прошлом году меня просто распирало от эмоций. Я делилась везде и со всеми тем какая классная книга эта Дюна. В тот момент мне казалось, что аудитория канала не готова к этому, ведь In tune это epitome of everything English.
В последствии, когда я начала делиться своим книжным клубом, мне показалось, что мы логически к этому пришли. Можно плавно перейти к Дюне. И голосования показывали неизменный интерес к этой теме. Но по факту такого интереса который мне казался возможным постинг не вызвал, a bit of a let-down.
▫️Мой интерес тоже не угас, но время сделало своё дело. Первая волна эмоций на которой я так долго ехала отошла на второй план и мне стало сложно сфокусироваться на чём-то одном от понимания того насколько много сфер жизни охватывает книга.
▫️ К этому добавился тот факт, что я начала перечитывать Дюну и это принесло новое осознание того, как изменилось мое восприятие книги. Раньше всё моё внимание было сосредоточено на Paul Atreides и его судьбе. Изменения в его жизни и повлёкшие их внешние события и внутренние искания не чужды каждому из нас и здесь есть над чем подумать.

Создание контента для меня было сосредоточено на аспектах, которые широко обсуждаются, но мне не откликаются настолько сильно.

Сегодня я собираюсь поделиться более личным взглядом на книгу и немного открыть душу.

🟡Dune in a few words

That’s quite a task to narrow down the plot of the book with so many intricacies to just a few words. Still, let me draw your attention to one of the things that acted like a catalyst. The words I’m going to share have to do with the treachery that got the ball rolling. It upended the state of things end evolved into something unprecedented.

Conspire against “Could a woman conspire against her own son?” - When Thufir Hawat got suspicious of Jessica.

Unobtrusively “I will see it is done unobtrusively.” - He had an idea to follow her every step, which was to be done unobtrusively.

Susceptible “It’s susceptible to various interpretations.” - The scrap of note that got into Hawat's hands was could have been interpreted differently.

Treachery “ Dr. Wellington Yueh, a name black in treachery but bright in knowledge”

Drive out such though “He shook his head sharply to drive out such thoughts” - The Duke was trying to force detrimental thoughts out of his mind.

Pursue other avenues “We must pursue other avenues for now.” - A shift of priorities.

Grows on ... “Perhaps this planet could grow on one. Perhaps it could become a good home for my son.” - This is just a part of what was said. Later the Duke circled back to the intricacies they handled.

Предлагаю посмотреть как она воспринимается другими.

Здесь, я предлагаю сыграть в игру. На ваш взгляд, эти комментарии о "Дюне" или нет.

🟡Часть 1
Дисклеймер: все чем я поделюсь ниже это исключительно мой опыт.

Думаю мой опыт не сильно бы поменялся, если бы я начала с прочтения книги. Мне плохо даётся чтение научной фантастики. Здесь нужно сильно погружаться в названия, иногда выдуманные языки, и т.д. Мне ближе реальные вещи.

Напомню, что моё знакомство с “Дюной” началось с экранизации. Особенно зрелищно история смотрится на большом экране. Детализированное визуальное и нарративное оформление; правильно поставленный свет, который позволяет без сомнения определить какие чувства овладели героем; реалистичная графика; звуковой ряд с лёгкостью погружают нас в этот мир и ещё на долгое время оставляют неизгладимое впечатление.

После такого сложно переключиться на чтение, когда автор более подробно знакомит нас с сюжетом. События, свидетелями которых в фильме мы становимся достаточно быстро (просто потому что это фильм, который длится два с половиной часа), в книге наступают после достаточно подробного объяснения сложившейся ситуации. Сюжетно мы видим немного другую картину, проступают детальные несоответствия, которые заставляют немного напрячь своё внимание. На первый взгляд звучит увлекательно, но я всё время была в каком-то ожидании и это немного сбивало.

Больше всего прочего мне было непросто свыкнуться с новыми понятиями, да, я нечасто читаю научную фантастику и причиной тому как раз является то, что мне сложно привыкнуть к совершенно новому выдуманному миру даже при наличии глоссария. Постоянно отвлекаться мыслью от чтения, чтобы перейти в него и найти то, что нужно, отвлекает от самого чтения.

Зато перечитывать книгу было одним удовольствием(я и в первый раз очень прониклась судьбами героев но отсутствия знаний и полноценного понимания немного на меня давило), я просто следовала сюжету и наблюдала за развитием ситуации.

▫️▫️▫️ Сегодня нас ожидает пост о трудностях чтения “Дюны”. Не все с ними сталкиваются, но как человек, которому пришлось нелегко, хочу поделиться почему она мне показалась такой непростой.

Dune. The inception

There’s one thing I should let you in on. I’ve never been a Dune-head. Even now that’s something I can’t completely relate to. Still, I keep on delving into anything Dune.

Part One was a random choice, which my then bf and I made back in 2021. Watching it I came to realize that the pacing of the first movie was slow enough to make one bored to death. Though, for me, it was anything but a tedious watch. I kept following the protagonists whose misfortunes had me glued the entire time.

From the very moment you see the story unfold, the very thought that something will go wrong keeps nagging at the back of your mind. We have to hand it to Denis Villeneuve and his team. They nailed it. They managed to build the suspension so brilliantly that you keep following wherever the plot brings you. And Part 2 only solidifies the overall experience.

For about two years, I didn’t come back to the thought of either reading or watching it.

It was not until the last year when I became an avid watcher of Actors on Actors (on Youtube), I came across an episode with one of the actors from the cast. Later, Youtube suggested quite a number of videos with the rest of the cast to watch. That’s how the idea to see Part 2 came about.

But what really deserves our undivided attention is that despite quite a few changes the movie still drives on the thoughts and inner emotions of the characters (same as the book). I couldn’t but shed a tear while watching it in the theater. I let the feelings pass through me. It’s touching to witness how everything that was build through centuries collapses and how vastly impacts quite a number of people.

That was the story of what exactly drew me into learning more about Dune through the book, thoughts on which I will be sharing later.▫️
