These days, school children have a hard time in concentrating at schools. This lack of focus can be attributed to two primary factors, and some workable measures can be taken to alleviate this issue.
To start, struggling to pay attention to school lessons can be explained with a couple of reasons. The first most obvious one has to do with the distractions and overstimulation coming from modern technology and media. As it comes as no secret, modern devices: laptops, mobile phones, and tables are readily available for all ages, children being no exception. Having been surrounded constantly with screens, streaming services and other digital gadgets, they are more likely to get an irresistible urge to utilize them. These platforms and services are designed to keep people engaged via their fast-paced, easy-to-grasp content, and as a result of being bombarded with short bursts of information on a daily basis, children find demanding, requiring analytical reasoning tasks and assignments challenging to concentrate on. In order words, the more short content they get exposed to, the worse attention span they tend to possess, making it hard to focus easily. Apart from side-effects of modern devises, children’s lifestyles – inadequate sleep and unbalanced diet - can be culprit of their lack of focus. Most children, nowadays, fail to obtain non-negotiable 8 hours of sleep daily due to unprecedented extracurricular activities, school assignments. When it comes to their eating habits, it usually consists of junk food, soft drinks and unhealthy-fats-containing snacks. These two abnormalities, in turn, result in sluggishness, poor memory retention and poor concentration in the classroom.
Several practical solutions can be put forth to counter school children’s reduced focus, one of which is increased parental and teacher supervision. By keeping an eye on children at home and at school, parents and teachers, respectively, should be aware of what types of activities young generations are engaged in. More specifically, parents should oversee their children’s screen time and keep them under increased control while making use of social platforms containing a massive amount of short content. As for teachers, collecting students’ mobile devices or prohibiting phone usage altogether would positively enhance students focus during classes. Another feasible way to combat lack of focus among school children can be encouraging them to adopt healthy habits. This can be accomplished by organizing seminars and some extra classes regarding the significance of proper sleep and healthy diet by school heads and principals, considering the fact that children take those people’s instructions seriously. For example, having regular physical activities before school lessons and encouraging children to consume more fruits and vegetables in children’s lunch time would help them to have a healthier lifestyle, consequently fostering their concentration.
To conclude, why children struggle to focus properly at school is because they are distracted and have a poor lifestyle, but some changes in their habits – engaging in more physical exercise and eating more healthily – and increased control would significantly improve their focus.
