In many countries, plastic shopping bags are the main source of rubbish. They cause water and land pollution, and so they should be banned. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

Environmental pollution has already become a cause for concern in many parts of the world, and plastic is one of the major causes of the issue. Therefore, it is believed that there should be a ban on the use of plastic bags. I completely agree with the statement for two reasons.

First, imposing a ban on plastic bags would be a reasonable course of action to prevent, or at least mitigate, the extinction of marine life, which is an indispensable part of the ecosystem. Because of the careless attitude people have towards the disposal of plastic into rivers and oceans, countless sea creatures and coastal birds are being killed every year. This has a significant economic impact on Asian countries, such as Thailand and Japan, whose livelihoods mainly depend on the ocean. Furthermore, plastic thrown away into the oceans will enter the food chain and is ultimately consumed by humans, which can trigger serious health problems such as cancer down the line. Hence, a prohibition on using plastic bags would help remedy the situation.

Second, the excessive use of plastic bags comes at a high cost to the land. Since the material is non-biodegradable and durable, it can alter the biological features of the land. As is no secret, plastic bags do not easily decompose, leading to long-term soil degradation and disrupting the natural balance of ecosystems. Another motive for the need to ban plastic shopping bags is that, as people unwisely dispose of them, they can be carried by the wind to urban areas, including streets, parks and gardens, resulting in an aesthetically unpleasant environment.

To conclude, it is argued that imposing a ban on plastic bags is an effective measure to significantly reduce water and soil pollution, and I am strongly in favor of the action for its invaluable benefits to the environment.

Housing is a basic necessity for everyone. Therefore, government should provide free housing for people who cannot afford to pay it.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

As housing is a fundamental human need, it is argued that the government ought to take on the responsibility of ensuring free accommodation for those who lack the financial means. While this can help reduce poverty, I strongly believe that it would place a heavy financial burden on the government, and recommend tackling the housing problem through other viable alternatives.

On the one hand, advocates of providing financially disadvantaged people with shelter at no cost suggest that it would be a key solution to the pressing problem of poverty. It is common knowledge that, without shelter, people are less likely to have the opportunity to educate themselves, which means that it might be challenging for them to secure a prestigious job with a decent salary. As a result, the vicious cycle of poverty might persist across generations. However, with such a policy, the government could relieve these individuals of housing concerns, thereby enabling them to grow both personally and financially.

As plausible as it seems, I am of the opinion that giving away homes to those in need might result in increased pressure on the national budget. Once a substantial portion of the government’s budget is allocated to the provision of housing, other equally important sectors, including education and healthcare, may be left underfunded. Focusing solely on satisfying the needs of the homeless would result in an unfair distribution of government budget, for every taxpayer has the right to access all public services.

In order to alleviate poverty and achieve social equity, governments can offer homes with low-interest rates to underprivileged families for an extended period of time. Once this policy is implemented, the chances are it will encourage many to strive harder to buy their own property. Thus, not only does this measure prevent dependency on the state, but it also allows other individuals to fully benefit from public services.

To conclude, while it may be seen as favorable to provide free housing to the needy, I subscribe to the idea that it would be an inequitable allocation of resources. Therefore, governments should address the issue while taking everyone’s needs into consideration.

The image explains how aluminium drinking cans are recycled. Overall, the process can be divided into three main stages: starting with the initial preparation of the cans, followed by the actual recycling process, and ultimately the production of new aluminium cans using the recycled material. While the majority of the wokr is completed by specialized equipment, minimal human labor is also needed.

Before aluminium cans are recycled, they go through a number of steps. Initially, people discard the cans into designated bins at a collection center and these discarded cans are separated from steel ones. Following this, aluminium cans are collected by garbage trucks, which deliver them to the recycling center.

Once at the facility, the cans are compressed into blocks, which are subsequently shredded. After this, the shredded aluminium is melted down to produce aluminium ingots. These solid blocks of aluminium are then thinned out using rollers. In the final step, before being distributed to vending machines, the aluminium is reconverted into beverage cans.

Nowadays, some consumers are less influenced by advertising than in the past.

What are the reasons?
Is it a positive or negative development?

Although advertisements have become ubiquitous, their impact is not as powerful as it once was. This can be attributed to the growing awareness among consumers and the emergence of ad-blocking technologies. Personally, I see this trend in a positive light for some reasons.

There are a couple of factors that explain why ads have become less persuasive for modern-day consumers. One has to do with a growing number of individuals who appear to be developing immunity to advertising. In other words, once a new product is launched into the market and endorsed, people usually seek information across various online platforms prior to making a purchase. They visit the official website of the company that launched the product or shopping platforms such as Amazon or Ozon to read customer reviews, to check product ratings so that they can make an informed decision. Another reason is the advent of ad-blocking technologies. More specifically, many people find adverts annoying because they frequently interrupt videos or movies they are watching. This has led many to resort to using certain programs designed to eliminate advertisements. Resultantly, there has been a decline in the influence of advertising on purchasing decisions.

In my view, this change in attitudes can be considered a favorable development. First and foremost, the shift in consumer behavior can minimize consumerism, which is one of the leading contributors to environmental pollution. As is no secret, advertising agencies have always attempted to encourage people to buy more, often with slogans such as "The choice of the bold" or "Buy today, pay tomorrow". Such deceptive techniques have driven the majority to purchase even unnecessary items, which has had adverse implications for the environment. However, today people have started to become socially responsible consumers, which may yield ecological benefits down the line.

To sum up, in the present day, it has been challenging to convince all customers through advertising, as a large number of people have become tech-savvy. I deem this trend positive because it may help discourage materialistic culture.

The bar chart compares how much money was expended on five different consumer items by French and British people in the year 2010.

Overall, people in France spent relatively more on computers and perfume, while those in the UK did so on the remaining goods. Additionally, in both countries, cars emerged as a major expense. Of particular note is that there was a noticeable difference in spending on cameras between the UK and France.

In detail, in Britain, people allocated a staggering £450,000 for cars as opposed to the French at £400,000. Spending on books, which ranked second, was higher in the UK than in France, with respective figures of 400,000 pounds and 300,000 pounds. As for cameras, the gap even widened further; the British allocated more than twice as much as the French, at £350,000.

On the other hand, the outlay on the other goods was higher in France. The gap in expenditure on computers was smaller, which amounted to just under 400,000 pounds and 350,000 pounds for France and Britain. Similarly, French people outspent their UK counterparts on perfume, with the former spending 200,000 pounds - about 50,000 pounds more than the British.

P.S. I do admit that I'm not good at compare charts, but I'm doing my best.

Despite better access to education, many adults today still cannot read or write.

In what ways are they disadvantaged?
What can governments do to help them?

Although there is increased access to education, illiteracy still remains a major problem for a significant number of adults across the globe. These people might confront barriers regarding employment and have difficulty executing daily tasks. However, these issues can be tackled by government funding focused on adult education programs tailored to everyone's needs involved.

The first obvious disadvantage of adult illiteracy is limited job prospects. In today's competitive job market, not only does one have to acquire the ability to read and write, but digital knowledge also comes into play during the hiring process. Being deprived of these skills, one cannot secure stable employment, nor can they earn a decent salary to make ends meet. The employment options they will be left with are those offering minimum wages and unsafe or unhealthy working conditions. Another serious implication stemming from a lack of fundamental reading and writing skills is having a hard time handling daily activities such as reading road signs, understanding medication instructions, or supporting children's education. Consequently, these individuals might experience constant stress and depression, which may contribute to mental health issues or emotional distress.

To remedy the situation, governments would be wise to invest in education programs. First, those who are residing in deprived areas with no access to education should be prioritized. In these areas, governments can set up community learning centers where people can learn at their own pace, thereby bridging the education gap. Additionally, to increase their employment opportunities, specialized courses aimed at vocational training could be offered by governments. For example, in the US, every year thousands of illiterate adults receive classes where they are taught practical skills for diverse jobs. Resultantly, such government-subsidized classes help adults gain hands-on experience, making them more attractive to employers.

To conclude, illiteracy can bring about a number of challenges for adults. However, governments can minimize those issues effectively by establishing educational programs to equip them with the necessary skills.

Some people believe that what children watch on television influences their behavior. Others say that the amount of time spent watching television influences their behavior.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Some argue that it is television content that develops bad habits in children, but others suggest that screen time has a larger role to play. I, personally, share the view that both the content children consume and the time spent watching TV equally contribute to shape their personality.

On the one hand, a case can be made that the programs children are exposed to influence their behavior in the absence of proper parental supervision. This is because the majority of parents have a hard time in allocating time for their children thanks to the demands of modern life. In a family where both parents are breadwinners, it would be challenging to control what their children are watching. Since children are not psychologically and mentally mature enough, they are less likely to know how to sort out what is useful for them. Constant exposure to violence on TV might result in behavioral change in them. For example, should a large portion of the content make up aggressive scenes such as shooting and killing people, the chances are they commence imitating what they see on television. This, in turn, can desensitize them to violence; even if they witness such immoral acts in real life, they would perceive them as normal behavior.

Conversely, others subscribe to the idea that however positive the content is, the amount of time spent in front of screens affects children's behavior. First, excessive amount of time allocated to watching TV can limit children's ability to socialize. Having fewer chances to talk in person, they may group up lacking the skills needed to navigate face-to-face interaction, which is one the most crucial skills to succeed in the future. Additionally, irritable behavior in children can be attributed to long hours in front of the TV. Being immersed in what they see, they might stay up late, being deprived of getting adequate amount of sleep. Sleep deprivation can make children short-tempered, nervous individuals later in life.

To conclude, while the content of television programs plays a strong role in shaping children's behavior, the amount of time they spend watching TV is equally important. I, therefore, strongly believe that both factors, without proper guidance can have an adverse impact on a child's overall development.

The first line graph describes how the proportion of households owning 3 different electrical appliances changed from 1920 to 2019 in a particular country while the second one illustrates how many hours per week each family spent on household chores during the same period.

Overall, ownership of all three appliances dramatically increased, with refrigerators witnessing the most dramatic rise. When it comes to the time allocated for housework, a reversal pattern can be observed. Notably, there is a negative correlation between the usage of the devices and the amount of time expended on housework.

In detail, though accounting for a relatively small figure, the proportion of households with refrigerators had soared by the final year. It stood at a mere 5% initially, which reached a chart-high of 100% in 1980, remaining constant thereafter. Similarly, just under a third households owned of vacuum cleaners in 1920. Thanks to an exponential rise, the percentage of for vacuum clean owners hit the peak of 100% as that of refrigerator ones in 2000, followed by a plateau. In contrast, the ownership figure for washing machines was somewhat erratic. It initially went up by 30% to reach 70% after four decades before dropping slightly to 65% in 1980, but it had bounced back to 75% by 2019.

As far as housework hours, the average weekly time on household tasks fell sharply from 50 hours to 20 hours between 1920 and 1960. From 1960 onwards, the decline in housework hours slowed down, with the figure ultimately reaching 10 hours at the end of the span in question.

Some parents and teachers agree that children's behavior should be strictly controlled. However, others believe that children should be allowed to experiment freely.

Discuss both the advantages and disadvantages.

There is an ongoing debate about whether children's behavior should be subject to firm control or not. While some are in favor of close supervision, others subscribe to the idea that children should be given more freedom. This essay will discuss the merits and demerits of both approaches.

Admittedly, monitoring children's acts and behavior closely can prove advantageous. One primary benefit is that children develop good manners, and this can prevent misbehavior. In other words, children are well aware of what is expected of them, for authoritative parents set clear rules and expectations. If they do not live up to the expectations of their parents, they know what consequences they may face. As a result, children are most likely to act responsibly and cautiously compared to their peers whose parents are lenient. However, strict parenting can come at a high cost, especially for children's overall development. Being constantly supervised by their parents, these children may develop into overdependent adults at a later stage. Once every decision is made by parents instead of letting children make their own, the chances are they will turn into poor decision makers, which is one of the most crucial skills everyone should be equipped with in day-to-day life. Hence, being poor at decision-making, one can face several challenges down the line.

On the other hand, allowing children to experiment for themselves can help them develop a number of positive traits. One clear benefit of such autonomy is that it boosts self-esteem. When children are given choices and opportunities to experience things first-hand, their self-esteem naturally grows. This could result in increased confidence, which is critical to succeed in school, work and personal goals. Although an autonomous approach to child upbringing can be effective, a child raised in this environment is likely to find it difficult to follow rules later in life. That is, once exposed to structured environments such as schools and workplaces, they might rebel against authority, potentially leading to difficulty in blending with others.

To conclude, while it is true that both parenting styles come with their benefits such as nurturing good manners and traits, it is also important to consider their drawbacks ranging from an inability to make sound decisions to difficulty in abiding by the rules in the future.

Some people think lawbreakers should be sent to prison. Others think they should do some alternative work.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

While some people support the idea of punishing criminals with imprisonment, others are not in favor of it, suggesting alternative options such as rehabilitation and community service. I personally believe that depending on the nature of the crime, either the former or the latter approach should be implemented.

On the one hand, proponents of imprisonment think that such a punishment would deter offenders from committing criminal acts and maintain public safety. That is to say, once lawbreakers are aware of the consequences they might face by serving a prison sentence, the chances are they will not reoffend. It is not uncommon to see employers checking criminal records of applicants during hiring, which makes criminals less desirable candidates. Furthermore, in order to provide safety for citizens, serious crimes like murder or assault need strict penalties. Should these violent offenders not be given a prison sentence, this could very likely lead to fear and panic among people. Thus, in order to ensure safety for the public, criminals should be sent to jail.

However, there are some who hold the view that it is critically important to try alternatives to prison, particularly for non-violent offenders. First, strategic rehabilitation programs aimed at educating, training and providing emotional support help to address root causes of criminal behaviour. Once they finish these programs, they will have the necessary skills and confidence to return to a normal lifestyle. Another equally important alternative to prison could be involving offenders in community work ranging from construction tasks to cleaning public areas. Not only does society benefit from their service, but reintegration into society also becomes easier for wrongdoers. As a result, these approaches can be effective in fostering positive change.

In conclusion, the advocates for prison punishment are of the opinion that if the violation is serious enough, this punishment can have the potential to prevent future criminal acts and ensure safety in society. Others, on the other hand, think that through a rehabilitative approach, we can turn criminals into law-abiding individuals. I strongly believe that the nature of the crime should determine which strategy is applied.

But why?

They say out of respect to Mr.Bekzod and all the work he has done for the IELTS community. I agree with this part, and I said it publicly once: he deserves a lot of respect, mine included. But does it mean my contribution is less? What if I impacted and changed more lives than him? (Not saying I did) This is a slippery slope (a dangerous situation/claim). That's why it is foolish to make a video comparing 2 teachers. And that's why I asked for its removal.

I DON'T need a correction video.

I need those 2 videos gone.

I need justice.

Alisher Sadullaev and IDP can serve justice by

(1) taking down the video

and

(2) making an apology message.

Is an apology message necessary? Yes, we cannot trust our leaders if they are not willing to accept their faults and seek forgiveness, just as we turn to God for repentance as an admission of our sins. Without an apology, they grow a thick skin and become more likely to act immoral again.

I cannot do it alone. I need your help. You can see with your eyes what they did is wrong. If you ignore it while having power and choice to change it, you become part of this lie.

Here's what we can do.

1. Repost these messages as much as we can

2. Boycott IDP (I officially ended our partnership)

These messages might get me in trouble, but I know I will get in much bigger trouble if I betray my values.

Choice is ours. Choice is yours. I choose to act.

This is fundamentally wrong. Alisher Sadullaev is a public servant (his pay comes from taxes paid by us, the people) who should ensure fairness and justice as well as inspiring and helping the Uzbek youth. But he is willingly engaging in an unfair act and misinforming his constituents (the public, us). Given his social media reach (1.8 mln views on that single video as I'm writing these posts), he has a social, and more importantly, moral obligation to act in a fair and responsible manner.

In the meantime, IDP released a "correction" video. You can watch it above. It doesn't correct anything. It makes the video even worse. All niners, except the first 2, are ranked based on the date when they took the test, not when their results came out. With the first 2, however, they show the date when the results were released, again to twist the facts.

This is a coordinated misinformation campaign (joint action) by Alisher Sadullaev and IDP to hide the truth.

Too much to process?

Let me give you some more context and explain things in more detail.

When the video was released, I told my friend Alisher (old friend, not the public official) we had to do something about it. His reaction was "you never cared about being called second. In fact, you said in the past (on a podcast) Mr.Bekzod deserves the "first" niner title more than you". He was right. I never did because before it was simply an opinion. But now Alisher Sadullaev, the Youth Agency, and IDP, are trying to pass it as a fact. The problem here is that these are verified, trusted sources, who people rely on to make important decisions.

I reached out to our then partner (not anymore) IDP to take down the video. They said their role in this video was only to provide the list of niners, which actually shows me as the first niner (a private exchange with IDP's Akmal Akhror). They said they talked to the agency and they said no to removing the video. I also asked to issue a public apology message for spreading wrong information and make a correction video. As you can imagine, the answer was again no.

The video has a good chance of being used as a marketing tool by the supposedly "first" niner to make millions of dollars annually. Yes, not thousands, but millions. If only you knew how much money big schools in Tashkent are making with their "Niner" campaigns, which raises the question of "whether Alisher Sadullaev and IDP did what they did to share in the profit”

Even if they didn’t, Alisher Sadullaev - a public servant - is knowingly engaging in the spread of misleading information, which can influence the decisions of many parents and students (millions of people based on the video view count).

Honesty...

Are we really being honest? Or are we simply covering up the truth with self-serving thoughts, images, or in this case, videos. What they call a good intention to inspire people and do good is, in reality, an attempt to serve personal interests (pride, ego, fame, etc.) and relationships at the expense of the real truth.

I'm making the following posts in response to immoral acts of the Youth Agency and Alisher Sadullayev and IDP and calling for your help to serve justice.

JUST KEEP GOING...

Sometimes those around you will not understand your journey. That's Okay. It's not their path, it's yours. Remember, if you live for people's ACCEPTANCE you will die from their REJECTION.
So don't worry about people's opinions of you. God never told you to impress people, only to love them.

Also, try to make a conscious effort to surround yourself with positive, nourishing, and uplifting people. People who believe in you, encourage you to go after your dreams, and applaud your victories.

Stay Strong.
