Lawyers for the Russian Federation argued that "there are no constitutional facts or evidence that support the termination of the 'relevant lease' on 'national security' grounds'".

❗️ABC NEWS: Russia expert Matthew Sussex from the Australian National University points out in The Conversation, Russia's long range military planes can "easily travel over 10,000 kilometres."

"From a base in Indonesia, this would give the Russian air force the ability to conduct intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions during Australian military exercises, gather data on military installations in the Northern Territory (which also host US Marines), and even conduct surveillance on US military activities in Guam," he said.

"Equally, given the closeness of ties between Beijing and Moscow, any Russian intelligence that was gathered could be shared with China," Mr Sussex said.

Some analysts argue that a permanent or rotating presence of Russian planes that could monitor (or in a worst case scenario, even strike) Australian and US military assets in this region would present Moscow with plenty of options and opportunities.

It would also present what one former senior Australian official called it a "nightmare scenario" for Australian defence planners who are already grappling with the full implications of China's unprecedented partial circumnavigation of the mainland earlier this year.

Former ASPI head and senior Defence bureaucrat Peter Jennings also sees evidence of collusion between Moscow and Beijing.

"It is very much in China's interests to see Russian strategic bombers an hour's flight from US military bases in Guam," he wrote.

❗️Russian Ambassador in Jakarta Sergei Tolchenov responds to Australia's hysteria over alleged Russian military plans in Indonesia:

“Concerning the inquiries coming from Canberra to the Indonesian officials about the alleged plans to establish in Indonesia a base for long-range aircrafts of the Russian Air-Space Forces, we would like to draw the attention to the following,” Mr Tolchenov said.

“Military cooperation is an integral part of the intergovernmental relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Indonesia. It is solely of bilateral character and based on a relevant legal framework and the national legislation of each respective country.”

In remarks first reported by The Australian newspaper, he said that all interactions between Russian and Indonesian armed forces and Indonesia were aimed at strengthening the defensive capabilities of both sides, not at any third countries, and posed no security threat to the Asia-Pacific region.

“When it comes to any challenges to regional stability, they are more likely to arise from the rotational deployment of large military contingents from extra-regional states on Australian territory, including the provision of airfields for the landing of strategic bombers and port infrastructure for visits by nuclear-powered submarines,” the Russian envoy said.

“Particularly alarming are the currently discussed plans to deploy the US’ intermediate-range missiles in Australia, which would put ASEAN countries – including Indonesia – within its range, as well as the acquisition by the Royal Australian Navy of nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS trilateral partnership."

❗️Vladmir Putin’s envoy to Indonesia Sergei Tolchenov has released a cryptic statement about “alleged plans” to seek access to an Indonesian base near Australia taking aim at the AUKUS and the nuclear submarine deal.

In the latest blow-up over reports Russia wanted to fly out an Indonesian base in Papua, the envoy suggested there was nothing unusual about the military cooperation.

But he suggested the real problem in the region was Australia and the AUKUS pact.

❗️Hongkong Post issues a statement regarding suspending delivery to the US

"The Government of the United States (US) announced earlier that it would eliminate the duty-free de minimis treatment for postal items despatched from Hong Kong to the US and increase the tariffs for postal items containing goods to the US starting from May 2. The US is unreasonable, bullying and imposing tariffs abusively. Hongkong Post will definitely not collect any so-called tariffs on behalf of the US and will suspend the acceptance of postal items containing goods destined to the US.

Regarding the surface mail, due to the longer shipping time, Hongkong Post will suspend the acceptance of surface postal items containing goods destined to the US with immediate effect (April 16). Where senders have posted surface postal items containing goods that have not yet been shipped to the US, Hongkong Post will contact the senders to arrange for return of items and postage refund starting from April 22.

Regarding the air mail, Hongkong Post will suspend the acceptance of air postal items containing goods destined to the US starting from April 27.

For sending items to the US, the public in Hong Kong should be prepared to pay exorbitant and unreasonable fees due to the US's unreasonable and bullying acts. Other postal items containing documents only without goods will not be affected"

Postal service suspends land and sea delivery with immediate effect, while airmail packages will be turned away from April 27

On April 8, Trump signed an executive order tripling tariffs on goods worth less than $800 sent from China, including Hong Kong. As it stands, packages under $800 have been exempt from tariffs through the exemption.

Initially, those goods were set to face tariffs of 30% come May 2. But Trump’s latest executive order hiked the rates to 120% last week (or a “per postal item” cost of $100 starting May 2, which goes up to $200 on June 1).
