Some feel that punishment should focus more on rehabilitation instead of long prison terms. Others feel prison terms are important for social stability.
Discuss both sides and give your opinion.
There is a view that less abrupt choices of punishment such as rehabilitation should be prioritized when dealing with lawbreakers. Others, however, think that this approach puts society in danger, resulting in an increase in crime rates. In my opinion, although rehabilitation might help individuals get back to their normal lives easier, imprisonment is more promising in the long term.
On the one hand, imprisonment often marks a turning point in one’s life by causing depression and associated low self-esteem. For this reason, it might be argued that rehabilitation should be opted for since then people who commit crimes would be recovered both physically and psychologically. During the process, criminals, if approached and treated by psychologists and experts in the field, come to understand the seriousness of their actions and how to continue their lives normally, without ever coming back to doing wrong and unlawful deeds. In this sense, rehabilitation certainly seems justifiable, given the harsh and oftentimes inhumane conditions they would have to endure if sent to prison.
However, no one can absolutely guarantee that this way of “punishment” would actually treat people and prevent further crimes. Instead, I believe it would expose the weaknesses in the law, meaning that people might start to doubt the inevitability of punishment for criminals. This is because if lawbreakers know that, regardless of their actions, they could get away with little or less punishment, they may continue to harm society. The resultant increase in crime rates means that society will be less secure, and the social instability is bound to happen. Imprisonment ensures that those people will not be returned to society until they are fully recovered.
In conclusion, thinking that rehabilitation prevents further crimes from happening would be too broad because no one can ensure this method fully works despite having benefits for certain individuals. The role of prisons should not be neglected here because it keeps criminals under control, preventing them from committing crimes again.
