Meet Joullanar Ali from Syria 🇸🇾

As a Foundation Program student, Joullanar is mastering Russian, prepping for a Master’s in big data, and making lots of new connections:

I’ve been fortunate to make friends from all over the world, thanks to the classes and the dorm. Some of the countries where I made new friends from include Lebanon, Algeria, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Senegal, Ethiopia, and Ecuador. It’s been an enriching experience and it’s really interesting to learn about each other’s traditions, food, and experiences.

ITMO international students shine at poetry contest 🎤

At the 6th reading competition Victory in the Hearts of Generations, nine international students from ITMO recited well-known Russian poems commemorating the Great Patriotic War – and three took the prize spot!

The winners from ITMO are:

🏆 Ricardo Augusto (Foundation Program) – 2nd prize for reciting Wait for Me and I’ll Be Back by Konstantin Simonov.
🏆 Ramin Jalalpoor (2nd-year Bachelor’s) – 3rd prize for Ballad of a Mother by Andrey Dementyev.
🏆 Hasan Dabbas (1st-year Bachelor’s) – 3rd prize for Over the Blue Neva by Alexander Prokofiev.

The students will now attend the award ceremony in Moscow and enjoy a tour of St. Petersburg.

And let’s not forget those talented students who also represented the university: Dicko Kante, Hossain Jafari, Zeinab Razzouk, Christian Anelka Keubou Tatsa, Louay Ahmad, and Wayne Makanhiva.

Structure:

1️⃣Start with the basics:

2️⃣ In one or two sentences, describe the position you’re seeking and the skills you’d like to put to work. This will help employers understand your goals and motivation.

3️⃣ Include your university, your major, and years of studies.

If you’re taking your first steps in the job market, this section can be one of the most important, especially if you have limited work experience.

You can highlight your academic achievements, such as research projects, conferences, or published articles.

4️⃣ Don’t worry if you don’t have much experience. Include any relevant roles you have – internships, volunteering or student projects. Hackathons, startups, and pet projects are worth a mention as well.

Mention the skills you developed that would be valuable in your desired job. Use active voice and quantify your achievements where possible.

5️⃣ To strengthen your CV, consider adding recommendations from teachers, internship supervisors, or other professionals who can confirm your skills and strengths as an employee or student.

It’s a return to his roots, a linguistic journey, and the thrill of a frozen-lake plunge. Here’s him sharing his favorite new expression in Russian:

“Ни пуха ни пера!” (“Neither fur nor feather!”) – it’s how Russians say “Good luck!” before exams. The reply is “К чёрту!” (“To the devil!”), which always cracks me up. It reminds me of our Italian version: “In bocca al lupo” (“In the mouth of the wolf”), to which we reply “Crepi il lupo!” (“May the wolf die!”).

A guided tour of the Birzvevaya campus 🏰

These 19th century edifices once belonged to the famed Eliseev merchant dynasty. It was here that the dynasty’s founder Pyotr Eliseev ran his wine-making business – and later, a chocolate factory!

Snow, banya, and coding. Willy’s time in St. Petersburg was fun – to say the least! ❄️

What’s it like to swap Indonesian sunshine for the Russian winter? For Willy Cahyadi, his five months at ITMO were packed with a few challenges, a handful of local traditions, and plenty of life-changing experiences. Now, back home, he looks back on the lessons he learned and the memories he’ll never forget.

Living abroad pushed me out of my comfort zone. I learned that failure isn’t the end – it’s just a part of the learning process. Oscar Wilde said, “Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes.” ITMO gave me plenty of both, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

🌿 Every year on the day of the spring equinox, millions of people around the world celebrate Nowruz – the start of spring and a new year!

We asked our international students what Nowruz means to them and how they celebrate 💛

🇮🇷 Raman Khan Ahmadi, Iran:
Nowruz is nature’s rebirth and our own fresh start. We perform Khane Tekani (deep-cleaning of our homes), refresh our wardrobes, set up the Haft-Sin table, and bake traditional Talesh bread. Every year, after visiting the elders, I travel to the Barzov Waterfall, where the first green shoots and blue flowers remind me that the earth is waking up again.

🇹🇯 Ulugbek Oripov, Tajikistan:
Nowruz is a time of togetherness — everyone goes out for walks, visits relatives, and celebrates together. The highlight for me is cooking Sumalyak with neighbors and family for about 20 hours, stirring in wishes for the year ahead.
May your home be filled with joy, abundance, and laughter!

🇦🇫 Ramin Jalalpoor, Afghanistan:
Nowruz, to me, is a new beginning. My favorite tradition is picnicking outdoors with family to welcome the year with fresh energy.
May this year bring peace, prosperity, and endless opportunities for all. Eid-e Nowruz Mubarak!

🇮🇷 Dorsa Abbasi, Iran:
Nowruz reminds me of my grandfather’s house — family, laughter, and warmth. This year, I celebrate far from home and I can’t help but miss those familiar faces and traditions. However, I’ve found a new family here in my international friends. It’s a reminder that Nowruz transcends borders, bringing people together no matter where they are.

A geology student from the University of Indonesia, Talitha came to St. Petersburg to study ecotechnologies, see a new culture, and step outside her comfort zone. But what was her favorite?

Everything! From the moment I arrived, I knew my time here would be special. Experiencing my first snowfall, exploring St. Petersburg, making friends from different cultures, and trying new foods – each moment felt surreal. One of my most unforgettable experiences was my trip to Yagodnoe. The breathtaking scenery, fun activities, and the warmth of the people made it a highlight.

Meet Omar Farshad Jeelani from Afghanistan 🇦🇫

Back in the days of his Master’s studies at ITMO, Omar shared with us his fascination with information security. Now a PhD student, he’s continuing to work on solutions for emerging digital threats.

My experience during the Master’s program was incredibly positive. Although I faced some initial challenges, such as language barriers in certain courses, the university’s supportive academic culture helped me overcome them. That experience reassured me that ITMO was the right place to continue my research.

Meet David Pincheira from Santiago, Chile 🇨🇱

Experienced beyond his years, David is now tackling a new challenge — learning Russian and upping his cybersec prowess at ITMO.

Before ITMO, I worked on managing data center hardware and network infrastructure at Google. I also gained experience in the stock market while working as the lead sysadmin for the investment division of a large bank in Chile. At 22, I founded my own company (Nudra), which I still run today. Despite all this, I wanted to expand my knowledge in cybersecurity and that’s what led me here.
