#writing7
Many supermarkets are selling more and more imported foods instead of selling locally produced foods.
What are the reasons for this?
İs this a positive or a negative development?
There is an opinion that the food market has been shifting towards imported goods, which implies that the ever growing number of supermarkets have been rather stoking on these types of produce instead of supporting and selling goods, produced by local businesses. There are two main reasons that can explain that trend, but despite that I would argue that it is a rather negative one.
The shift towards goods, produced in other countries stems from two, mostly economically explained, reasons. In terms of the first reason, there is no denying that within the global economy each country has its own specialisation, be it in the field of food production or technology development. Thus, for certain countries, which due to such factors as climate conditions, territory or overall number of population, can not harvest specific crops or get involved in cattle growing and meat production, the end price for these products will inevitably be lower than that of local farmers. As supermarkets are mostly interested in getting foods for lower prices from producers, they would rather opt for imported, but cheaper options. Equally important is the second reason - imported foods can be in high demand and be more popular with end consumers. Some people are attracted to products from other countries, as they can find them both more exciting to try or just tastier than those, produced locally. Hence, in order to fulfil this demand supermarket chains conclude agreements with foreign producers and buy such foods in bulk for cheaper, while selling them at elevated prices. As a result, the latter gives grocery shops an opportunity to get some extra revenue and satisfy the desires of their consumers.
In regards to the nature of this development, I would argue that it is negative, as it demotivates local food producers. The latter leads to the number of farmers constantly decreasing for a simple reason of lack of demand from big supermarket chains and, hence their costs become higher than projected returns. In its turn, this tendency has a more serious consequence of a country being unable to provide for itself. Agriculture, namely farming, is quite a cornerstone sphere, that has a strategic position in terms of the overall economic development. It provides jobs for people with lower qualifications and makes a country more stable in case of any contingencies that can easily appear in the process of transportation of goods from other countries and even continents. Supermarkets that only rely on imported foods are bound to have a more risky position, as any inconveniences with shipments may impede their business process as a whole.
To conclude, I would like to highlight that, while there are evident reasons for selling imported goods with higher profits in mind, diversifying the range of products in supermarkets with the produce from local producers is a must that not only gives reason to farmers existence, but also makes a country more economically stable.
