Drugs seized in Mohnyin and North Okkalapa

A combined team comprising members of the Anti-Drug Police Force searched a Mitsubishi Canter driven by Saw Tha Htoo, accompanied by Saw Naing, near Nantsiaung Village in Panglong Village-tract, Mohnyin Township, at 6 pm on 21 April. The police seized 43.5 kilogrammes of opium extract worth K60.9 million and 35 kilogrammes of raw opium valued at K42 million.

Additionally, the police searched a package belonging to Ma Lei Zarli Htay at a bus station in North Okkalapa Township at 3 pm on 21 April and seized 48,000 stimulant tablets valued at K48 million. The offenders are being prosecuted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

Drugs seized in Mohnyin and North Okkalapa

Myanmar extradites 3 undocumented Malawians

MYANMAR deported three Malawians for their involvement in telecom fraud and destructive actions via the Myanmar-Thailand Friendship Bridge II yesterday. Myanmar authorities officially handed over the deportees and the necessary legal documents to ensure their smooth repatriation.

Between 30 January and 23 April 2025, a total of 9,032 illegal immigrants were identified and detained in Myanmar. Of this number, 7,311 individuals have already been deported through Thailand to their respective countries, while arrangements are being made to deport the remaining 1,720 individuals. These individuals are currently under detention while awaiting repatriation.

The government is strictly cracking down on online scams and online gambling by cooperating with other countries, including neighbouring countries, especially through the Myanmar-China-Thailand Trilateral Cooperation, and systematically transferring the foreigners involved in these operations.

SAC Chair Office Ministry 2 Union Minister signs condolence book for former Malaysian PM

ON behalf of the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Union Minister U Ko Ko Hlaing of the Ministry 2 at the Chairman Office of the State Administration Council signed the condolence book for the late former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at the Malaysian Embassy in Yangon yesterday.

During his visit, Union Minister U Ko Ko Hlaing met the Chargé d’Affaires and officials of the Malaysian Embassy and conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Government of Myanmar for the demise of former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. He then signed the condolence book to express Myanmar’s sympathy and solidarity formally.

Tun Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi served as the fifth Prime Minister of Malaysia from 2003 to 2009.

Myanma Post to release K2,400 special block stamp on 28 Apr

MYANMA Post under the Ministry of Transport and Communications will issue a special block stamp worth K2,400 to commemorate the twelve seasonal festivals and flowers.

This new commemorative stamp will be available for sale from 9:30 am on Monday, 28 April 2025 (2nd waxing of Kason, 1387 Myanmar Era) at the Central Post Office in Nay Pyi Taw, general post offices Yangon and Mandalay, as well as at major post offices in regions and states across the country.

As part of a special arrangement, date-stamped cancellations will be applied to stamps purchased on Monday, 28 April 2025, at the Central Post Offices in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, and Mandalay.

Just 273 mobile communication stations await repairs

THE Mandalay earthquake that occurred on 28 March destroyed 6,730 mobile communication stations, and maintenance works were conducted. As of 22 April, 6,457 stations have restored their communication services, and only 273 stations remain to be repaired across the nation – 88 MPT stations, 115 ATOM stations, 49 Ooredoo stations and 21 Mytel stations.

Aid flows as Myanmar quake toll hits 3,759

A powerful earthquake struck Myanmar on 28 March, severely striking six regions and states. As of 23 April, the disaster has caused the deaths of 3,759 people and injuries to 5,107 others, with 114 individuals still reported missing.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing, led by the Myanmar Fire Brigade along with both local and international rescue teams. They continue to reach the affected areas in time and have successfully rescued 653 people alive from collapsed buildings. They have also recovered the bodies of 767 people.

Local and international donors are contributing money and relief materials to assist those affected by the earthquake. Between 7 pm on 22 April and 5 pm on 23 April, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Myanmar delivered 10.96 tonnes of aid, including tarpaulins and water purification tablets, to the Yangon International Airport.

Meanwhile, Shenzhen Salubris Pharmaceuticals Company Limited of China, through the China-Myanmar Economic Cooperation and Development Promotion Association, dispatched 2.004 tonnes of medical supplies to the Ministry of Health and Mandalay General Hospital.

These relief items are reaching the hands of affected people as quickly as possible.

IN memory of Pope Francis, who passed away on 21 April, Union Minister for Ministry 2 at the Office of the State Administration Council Chairman U Ko Ko Hlaing signed the condolence book at the Holy See (Vatican City) Embassy in Yangon yesterday afternoon.

During his visit, the Union Minister met with the Charge d’Affaires and officials of the embassy, extending heartfelt condolences and expressing sympathy over the passing of Pope Francis. The Union Minister offered condolences on behalf of the government of Myanmar and signed the book in tribute to the late Pope. Pope Francis, who began his papacy in 2013, made an official goodwill visit to Myanmar in 2017.

DPM MoTC Union Minister reviews Nay Pyi Taw-Toungoo rail track

DEPUTY Prime Minister and Union Minister for Transport and Communications General Mya Tun Oo inspected the upgrading work on quake-affected rail tracks and bridges between Nay Pyi Taw railway station and Toungoo railway station by RBE special train on 22 April.

The Deputy PM and party inspected the Ywataw, Pyinmana, Pyiwin, Ela, Thawuthti, Yeni, Myohla, Thagara, Swa, Kongyi, Yedashe, Kyungon and Kyaytaw railway stations. During the inspection, he instructed officials concerned to expedite the repair work, demolish the stations if needed as per procedures, draft the new railway station designs and estimation for the new railway stations depending on their sizes.

They proceeded to Toungoo Railway Station and inspected the quake-affected buildings and made proper instructions.

During the inspection tour, the General cordially greeted the staff and their families from Pyiwin, Yeni, Myohla, Kongyi, Kyaytaw and Toungoo railway stations and the civil engineers.

SAC Vice-Chairman Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Senior General Soe Win inspects earthquake-affected Pyinmana Myoma Market 1, Institute of Agriculture and Livestock Breeding

Vice-Chairman of the State Administration Council Deputy Prime Minister, Vice-Senior General Soe Win, who is also Chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee, inspected the damage to the No 1 Myoma Market in Pyinmana and the Institute of Agriculture and Livestock Breeding caused by the earthquake in Nay Pyi Taw Council Area yesterday afternoon.

At the No 1 Myoma Market in Pyinmana, the Vice-Senior General viewed efforts of Tatmadaw members and volunteers in clearing debris at collapsed A and B complexes caused by the Mandalay earthquake and aftershocks, and conditions of slightly impacted C and D complexes of the market and gave instructions to officials.

The market was built in 1995 on 4.375 acres of land. It was formed with four market complexes comprising 1,369 shops. The recent earthquake destroyed 393 shops in A and B complexes. Shops from slightly damaged C and D complexes are allowed to continue sales of goods without tax. During the period when the Myoma market is being rebuilt, a temporary market is being allowed at the Aungmingala yard near the Yangon-Mandalay Highway in Pyinmana Township.
At the Institute of Agriculture and Livestock Breeding in Shwechi Ward of Pyinmana, the Vice-Senior General heard reports by Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Min Naung on the damage to historic buildings and other buildings caused by the earthquake in the compound of the institute

The Vice-Senior General viewed round damaged buildings, namely: the Agricultural Machinery building (cetenary building), the principal’s office, Karamat Hall, the guesthouse, Yinma Hall, Tharaphi Hall, Shwe Yaung Chi Hall and lecture halls.

He instructed officials to rebuild the damaged lecture halls in original states, conduct soil tests before reconstruction, and examine the conditions of slightly damaged buildings and staff housing for repairs in cooperation with officials and experts before opening of the institute in June, and systematically keep important documents and teaching aids.

The Vice-Senior General gave words of encouragement to the principal, teachers, staff and families of the institute. As teachers and staff families reported on their requirements, the Vice-Senior General pledged to provide basic foodstuffs for families for one month and to build modular houses as the temporary school office and staff housing for convenient accommodation.

The institute is composed of 92 buildings. Of them, five ancient buildings and three others, totalling eight, were destroyed by the earthquake. Moreover, one ancient building and four other structures were damaged at dangerous level. Currently, the institute requires lecture halls for 461 students from the first to third year courses.

The agricultural machinery department office (cetenary building) is a venue where students were taught in welding, mortar repairing, blacksmithing and wood works after the institute was established in 1923.

2,400 tonnes of cement arrive at Yangon Port to meet demand

In a bid to meet growing demand, 2,400 tonnes of cement again landed at Thakayta Warf of Myanma Five Star Line, Yangon Port, on the evening of 20 April.

Cement imports are allowed to meet the increasing demand as the construction businesses are fully operational in the open season, besides the post-earthquake resettlement activities. The ships carrying cement keep calling in the country via the Kawthoung border.

The State gives the green light to cement imports, and the remaining ships loaded with cement will dock at the Port every week.

Shweme Port in Shwepyitha Township, Yangon handled 3,010 tonnes of cement on 18 April and 1,500 tonnes on 9 April. Moreover, 3,100 tonnes also arrived at Mottama Port in Shwepyitha on 2 April.

21 cold storage facilities gear up to export freshwater fish to Saudi Arabia

The Fisheries Department stated that 21 cold storage facilities are preparing to follow the Best Aquaculture Practices and food safety standards to be able to export freshwater fish to Saudi Arabia.

The ongoing situation of 21 cold storage facilities endeavouring to seek globally recognized BAP certificates is reported to Saudi Arabia’s counterparts. They are trying to strictly follow the BAP standard. The Department of Fisheries is also planning to inform Saudi Arabia of possible fish diseases that can be found in Myanmar.

The BAP certification is to ensure that aquaculture seafood is produced safely, environmentally sustainable, and ethically per international food safety standards.

Saudi Arabia does not accept the export of farm fish under integrated chicken and fish farming. Myanmar exports freshwater fish that thrive in their natural aquatic environments to Saudi Arabia, generating an income of about US$50 million per year. If Myanmar can export farmed fish to Saudi Arabia, it could double its earnings.

Myanmar steadily exports seafood to 40 countries, including China, Thailand, Japan and some European countries.

More than 20 fish species, including hilsa, rohu, catfish, and seabass, are conveyed to foreign markets, according to the Myanmar Fisheries Federation.

Myanmar bagged over $722 million from 550,000 tonnes of fishery exports as of February 2025 in the financial year 2024-2025 beginning 1 April.

Yangon’s high-rise apartment sales decline

IN the Yangon property mar­ket, high-rise apartment sales have been slow, according to real estate agents.

After the quake struck on 28 March, Yangon residents became anxious about living in high-rise buildings, leading to a trade of flats.

“People dared not live in high-rise buildings after the earthquake, which affected the property market to some ex­tent, especially the transaction of high-rise apartments has now slowed,” said an official from the Myanmar Real Estate Services Association (central).

Buyers’ interest has now turned to a cosy living style recently.

“Recently, people have been more interested in land plots, rather than high-rise buildings. But it also depends on location. People who need to live in downtown may think of another option, but most people may consider living in a comfortable home in the countryside,” he added.

Nay Pyi Taw Development Committee invites tender for 5,000 tonnes of coal

The Tendering Committee under the Nay Pyi Taw Development Committee invited qualified suppliers to buy 5,000 tonnes of coal to use in brick manufacturing at the Nay Pyi Taw brick factory.

The brick factory owned by the Nay Pyi Taw Development Committee called for an open tender to procure 5,000 tonnes of coal with a moisture content of less than 12 per cent and an average heat rate of 5,000 KCal/Kg (9,000 Btu/Lb).

The tender form can be taken out from 22 April 2025, and the tender submission will be closed on 5 May.

Mongphone Sayadaw donates K50 mln to restore Mahamuni Pagoda

Mongphone Sayadaw donated K50 million for the renovation of the Mahamuni Pagoda in Mandalay, according to U Mya Win, Chairman of the Mahamuni Pagoda Board of Trustees.

Mongphone Sayadaw, who is currently on a donation tour to support earthquake-affected areas, arrived in Mandalay on the evening of 20 April and temporarily stayed at Mongphone Monastery near the Swaltaw Pagoda. On the morning of 21 April, he delivered a sermon to pilgrims at the Swaltaw Pagoda before visiting the eastern archway of the Mahamuni Pagoda, where he donated K50 million to the Pagoda Board of Trustees for renovation works.

After spending the night in Pyin Oo Lwin, the donation convoy will return to Mandalay and continue to Nay Pyi Taw. The convoy will stop overnight following donations there. Upon departure for Yangon, the convoy will pause for three days, during which Mongphone Sayadaw will conduct loving-kindness sessions before returning to Taunggyi.

Mongphone Sayadaw donates K50 mln to restore Mahamuni Pagoda

Myanmar-China Friendship Association funds religious site restorations in Mandalay & Sagaing

The Myanmar-China Friendship Association (Central) has donated funds for the comprehensive renovation of religious buildings in Mandalay and Sagaing, according to the organization.

As part of these donations, on 21 April, K100 million was donated for the comprehensive renovation of the Mahamuni Pagoda, K120 million to the Bramaso Humanitarian Aid Organization (BHAO), and K50 million to the Kokang Buddhist Temple in Mandalay. Similarly, the association donated K38.4 million to the Sitagu Sayadaw, who is leading the comprehensive renovation of religious buildings, pagodas, and Sitagu missionary facilities in Sagaing.

In collaboration with Chinese rescue teams, the association travelled to areas affected by the Mandalay earthquake to provide vital relief assistance and, on 19 March, jointly donated gold robes worth over K40 million to the Shwedagon Pagoda with its partner organizations.

13 minor tremors shake Myanmar-Thailand border on 22 Apr

A total of 13 small aftershocks measuring between 1.5 and 3.4 magnitudes hit Myanmar and the border area with northern Thailand early on 22 April, The Nation newspaper reported, cit­ing a statement from the Thai Meteorological Department.

It stated a 1.8-magnitude earthquake with a depth of 3 kilometres struck near the Thai-Burma border, Tak Prov­ince, at 2:09 am local time and the epicentre was located about 10 kilometres northwest of Phop Phra, at a latitude of 16.463 degrees north and a lon­gitude of 98.640 degrees east.

Government employees resume duties with renewed energy

ll the government employees attended their offices after the Myanmar New Year holidays from their temporary relief camps and accommodations by their departmental shuttle buses, and actively carried out their duties yesterday.

The Ministry of Information organized a work coordination meeting on the first day of office yesterday. Union Minister for Information U Maung Maung Ohn, the deputy minister, the permanent secretary and departmental officials attended the meeting.

Speaking at the event, the Union minister said all the staff returned to work with renewed spirit after the long Thingyan holidays, and today also marks the resumption of office operations that had slowed down due to the earthquake that happened on 28 March. Rescue operations were completed, the rehabilitation processes were also launched, and the machinery of government began to function normally again.

He continued that the Prime Minister also instructed to resume office operations regarding the news releases in detail. All should follow the directives systematically, and the officials should supervise the attendance of staff daily. The bashas and temporary tents are also established for the staff, and the staff are also relocated to the first and second floors of the office to ensure the normal operations of the office.

Afterwards, the deputy minister, permanent secretary and departmental officials coordinated the discussion.

In the evening, the Union minister and party inspected the construction of tents near the office for the staff.

Government employees resume duties with renewed energy

182 EPS Myanmar workers deployed on 22 Apr

FURTHER, 182 EPS Myan­mar workers were sent to the Republic of Korea through the Public Overseas Employment Agency (POEA) on 22 April, according to the Myanmar Embassy in the Republic of Korea.

Of 182, 102 are re-entry workers, 56 are new agricul­ture and livestock workers, and 24 are new manufacturing workers.

Myanmar workers arrived at Incheon Airport from Yan­gon on 22 April on a Korean airline KE 490 flight, and the Myanmar labour attaché from Seoul welcomed them, advised what they follow, and provided necessary assistance.

On 19 March, POEA sent 58 manufacturing workers, 25 forestry workers, 19 construc­tion workers, 7 service workers (one is a woman) and 15 agri­culture and livestock workers, totalling 124 EPS workers.

According to data re­leased by the embassy, 107 manufacturing workers and 37 agriculture and livestock workers, totalling 144, were sent on 15 January, and 139 manufacturing workers (19 are forestry workers) and 8 construction workers, totalling 147, were sent on 12 February.

182 EPS Myanmar workers deployed on 22 Apr

Deputy PM MoTC Union Minister inspects Pyinmana Station, Cybersecurity Department

State Administration Council Member, Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Transport and Communications General Mya Tun Oo visited earthquake-affected sites in the Nay Pyi Taw Council Area yesterday afternoon. He was accompanied by deputy ministers and senior officials. The inspection included Pyinmana Railway Station Yard and the Department of Information Technology and Cybersecurity.

The Deputy Prime Minister and his team arrived at Pyinmana Station in Pyinmana Township. They inspected repair work carried out at the train ticket office, which was damaged by the recent earthquake. They then observed the damaged buildings in the station yard, the repair progress of the power substation inside the yard, the post office building and the pedestrian overpass. He provided instructions to properly store traditional bricks and roof tiles and to prevent roofing sheets from being blown away.

He also instructed officials to urgently repair the signalling systems at train track crossings that were damaged by the earthquake. To speed up the repair process, he suggested inviting skilled workers, retired staff and experts familiar with the department’s operations to work together and come up with practical solutions.

General Mya Tun Oo also visited the Department of Information Technology and Cybersecurity in Zabuthiri Township. They checked the damage to the main office building and reviewed the status of temporary arrangements for essential equipment. They also examined how well cybersecurity services were continuing and visited the construction site of a new Data Centre Farm. He stressed the importance of ensuring safety for personnel, equipment and systems, and instructed officials to follow standards and build the facilities with full quality.

In the evening, the General and his team visited locations near Ministry Office 5 and Office 2 to inspect land areas prepared for constructing temporary housing for staff families affected by the earthquake.

Statement on Temporary Ceasefire

1. Tatmadaw has issued a statement on a temporary ceasefire from 2 to 22 April 2025, focusing on the restoration of peace and stability to consider the sufferings of the entire people with sympathy due to the powerful Mandalay earthquake which struck on 28 March and expediting rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations with momentum.

2. At present, the government is tirelessly carrying out reconstruction and rehabilitation measures in the earthquake-affected areas while international communities dispatch rescue teams and medical teams to Myanmar with necessary assistance and relief supplies.

3. In conducting reconstruction and rehabilitation operations, utmost efforts must be made to rebuild damaged government offices and departments, public housing and transport facilities and beef up the manufacturing processes based on agriculture and livestock industries. If all national brethren of the Union collaborate, the situation of quake-affected areas will return to normal as rapidly as possible.

4. As such, Tatmadaw further extended the temporary ceasefire period from 23 to 30 April 2025 to ensure peace and stability, aimed at continuously accelerating re­construction and rehabilitation measures in the quake-affected areas, promptly implementing the interests of the State and all citizens, and initiating the durable and genuine peace.

5. During the period of temporary ceasefire, ethnic armed organizations and other armed groups are not to disturb, attack, destroy public communication routes, cause loss and damage to life and property of the people, attack camps of security forces who are performing security duties and upholding the rule of law, harass or attack military headquarters and engage in such activities as recruitment, military build-up and territorial expansion which can harm peace process. If they do so, Tatmadaw will take necessary actions and respond as part of protecting the people.

8th batch of China’s humanitarian aid arrives in Yangon

The eighth batch of humanitarian aid from the People’s Republic of China for areas affected by the recent Mandalay earthquake arrived in Yangon yesterday afternoon via an Air China Cargo flight.

The shipment included 37,903 kilogrammes of medicines. Upon arrival at Yangon International Airport, Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein, officials from the regional government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, and Mr Ouyang Daobing, Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar, welcomed the aid.

Mr Ouyang Daobing officially handed over the aid supplies, which were accepted by Chief Minister U Soe Thein. The materials are now loaded onto designated vehicles for delivery to quake-affected areas.

Rapid structural checks underway in Bagan after quake

The earthquake that hit Myanmar on 28 March caused significant damage to both people and buildings. The Bagan region was also affected, with some ancient cultural heritage sites, including pagodas, stupas, and temples, experiencing minor damage. Timely restoration efforts were carried out, according to the Bagan Archaeological Department.

“When the earthquake hit Bagan, it caused damage only to bricks. There is no collapse. On that day, we immediately conducted an on-ground study in groups. Since 2012, we have been working with UNESCO on how to conserve the mural paintings, what should be prioritized, and how to implement preventive measures in case of an earthquake. After the 2016 earthquake, we collected the survey systematically and carried out measures to ensure the strength. Although the current earthquake lasted long, there were only minor incidents, such as dust and debris falling from the bricks and small cracks in the walls. The inner structures of stupas and pagodas are solid, and only slight cracks appear on the outer surfaces. There is no danger and no bricks have collapsed,” said U Kyi Lin, department assistant director.

During the restoration efforts following the damage caused by the 2016 earthquake in Bagan, certain structural elements such as terraces, surrounding stupas, main facades, and Yama Lat Nyo, including various surrounding architectural features of pagodas and stupas, were not fully restored or reinforced. However, no significant damage occurred during the recent earthquake.
The umbrellas of Shwezigon and Htilominlo pagodas and other famous pagodas in Bagan were shaken due to the earthquake on 28 March, but they were not destroyed. However, some mural paintings from the three pagodas were affected, and the department invited donors to maintain them.

The 43rd UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on 6 July 2019 recognized the pagodas in the Bagan Ancient Cultural Heritage Zone as World Heritage Sites, and the Archaeological Department also works with UNESCO in preserving the cultural heritage.

There are 53 world heritage sites in Italy, 53 in China, 47 in Spain, 44 each in France and Germany and 37 in India. In the Southeast Asian region, UNESCO allows each country to have up to 15 heritage sites recognized.

Vietnam ups wind, solar targets as energy demand soars

VIETNAM has dramatically increased its wind and solar targets as it looks to up its energy production by 2030 to meet soaring demand, according to a revised version of its national power plan.

The Southeast Asian country has committed to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and the latest edition of its Power Development Plan 8 (PDP8), as it is known, maps out how it will reach those goals.

The manufacturing powerhouse has been heavily reliant on coal to meet its rapidly expanding energy needs. But now it wants to “strongly develop renewable energy sources”, according to the plan, which was published Wednesday on the government’s news portal.

With targets set at 73 gigawatts (GW) for solar and 38 GW for onshore wind energy by 2030 — and a significant increase to 296 GW and 230 GW erhouse has been heavily reliant on coal to meet its rapidly expanding energy needs. But now it wants to “strongly develop renewable energy sources”, according to the plan, which was published Wednesday on the government’s news portal. With targets set at 73 gigawatts (GW) for solar and 38 GW for onshore wind energy by 2030 — and a significant increase to 296 GW and 230 GW by 2050 — the plan looks “really ambitious”, said Andri Prasetiyo, senior researcher at Senik Centre Asia. The 2023 version of the PDP8 aimed for 12.8 GW for solar and 21 GW for wind by the end of the decade.

“I think this sends a clear message, Vietnam is positioning itself to maintain leadership in Southeast Asia’s clean energy transition, (even) taking a more prominent role in the region,” he told AFP.

Light rain boosts squid fishing as closed season ends

LIGHT rain made squid more active in the sea territory of Taninthayi Region, prompting Salon people to go hunt the squid even at night with their Kaban boats. Consequently, the squid fishing businesses thrive at the end of the closed season.

Salon people rely on squid fishing, collecting sea urchins underwater and harvesting barnacle/sea oysters for a living.

Squid catch is quite low in the hot season, yet light rain in post-Thingyan made them active in the seawater. So, the catch has increased.

Salon people mostly hunt squid seawater near Magyogayat village and Lampi Island with the use of Kaban boats. The residents use fake feed as bait to entice them into the bow net installed underwater. Up to two-kilogramme-size squid are even caught. Squid prefers cool weather, so the fishing goes well at that time.
Offshore squid fishing is normally run in the dry season. The trawlers with lights start leaving two days after the full moon. They return to the shore over three weeks later. Most of the squids are exported to China and Thailand after processing with ice.

“The weather transitions from hot to cold have occurred in recent days. Light rain makes the fishing business beneficial. The squid fishing is normally from Thadingyut to Thingyan, and the closed season is during May for those who come and fish from further areas. However, Salon people are mostly in the sea for living except for extreme weather conditions,” said U Tin Aung Moe, the administrator of Magyongalat village.

Offshore squid fishing runs from October to the first week of May. During the late waning days before the new moon, the sea is crowded with the trawlers with light decorations like floating candles during the Thadingyut Festival. Salon people sell squid inshore for a living.

According to the Illegal Trade Eradication Steering Committee, combined teams seized 7.613 tonnes of illegal teak timbers, 9.139 tonnes of other timber and 6.05 tonnes of charcoal in Lewe, Pyinmana and Ottara districts in Nay Pyi Taw Council Area on 18 April.

Under the management of the Customs Department, combined squads impounded consumer goods approximately worth K7.344 million without any documents from a Higer Bus worth K60 million at the Mayanchaung permanent checkpoint on 21 April.

Action was taken against offenders for their illegal and smuggled goods under the Forest Law and Customs procedures. On 18 and 21 April, combined teams seized illegal goods approximately valued at K71.46 million in 11 cases.

Tachilek seizure nets K1.18B+ in drugs, weapons, and ammo

According to the Myanmar Police Force, a combined task force consisting of members of the Anti-Drug Police Force arrested four individuals — Nyikat (aka) Lawna, Aik Pleik, Sam Chin, and Seng Kham – at around 3:30 pm on 19 April. The arrests took place on Bogyoke Road, in Weinkyauk Ward, Tachilek Township, as the suspects arrived to conduct a drug transaction.

Authorities seized a total of 602,000 stimulant tablets, along with three vehicles: a Vigo, a Lexus, and a Crown.

Based on information obtained from the initial arrests, a further operation was carried out the same night at 11 pm at the residence of Hwayhti, a drug dealer in Yanaungmyay Ward, Tachilek. During the raid, authorities seized 2.45 kilogrammes of morphine blocks, 6 kilogrammes of “Ice” (methamphetamine), 28,000 stimulant tablets, 28.5 kilogrammes of raw opium, 100 kilogrammes of ketamine, and 18 sets of mould used in WY pill production. Additionally, three pistols, 728 rounds of various ammunition, and three more vehicles were confiscated.

In total, narcotics, firearms, and related equipment worth approximately K1.18 billion in local market value were seized. Legal action has been taken against the suspects under the relevant laws, and efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the drug trafficking network. Authorities are also pursuing further legal measures under the Anti-Money Laundering Law to confiscate all assets and financial gains obtained through the illegal drug trade and transfer them to the public treasury.

Zaycho Market, Mann Myanmar Plaza cleared safe and reopen post-quake inspections

Following structural inspections of the Mandalay Zaycho Market and Mann Myanmar Plaza after the recent earthquake, both buildings were found to be structurally sound, and shops have now reopened as usual, according to the responsible personnel of the Market Association.

“Starting from 21 April, the market will operate during its regular hours. The main building and the underground section were designed to be earthquake-resistant from the outset, so the structures remain strong and safe. Therefore, I would like to inform everyone that shops may now reopen,” said Chairman U Min Min of the Market Association.

The buildings of Mandalay Zaycho Market and Mann Myanmar Plaza were inspected by both local and international structural assessment teams on 4 and 7 April. The inspections confirmed the buildings’ integrity, which led to the decision to allow shops to reopen between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm.

“Experts have examined the structures and deemed them safe. As a result, we are permitting the market to reopen from 21 April. The Mandalay City Development Committee has also reviewed the buildings and confirmed their safety, allowing operations to resume,” said U Soe Lin, Chairman of the Mann Myanmar (Zaycho Market) Plaza Association.

In response to the damage caused by the earthquake in Mandalay, the Mandalay City Development Committee – under the supervision of the Mandalay Region Government – has established a command office to coordinate recovery efforts. The committee is providing personnel and equipment to remove damaged structures while engineering teams continue to conduct safety inspections of affected buildings.

Quake-hit areas receive rapid international aid, medical supplies

The earthquake that struck Mandalay on 28 March caused widespread damage across the Nay Pyi Taw Council Area, Sagaing Region, Mandalay Region, Magway Region, Shan State, and Bago Region. In response, the government initiated urgent measures to assess the impact, conduct rescue and relief operations, and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid from abroad.

Since the night of 29 March, international humanitarian assistance and medical supplies have been arriving at Yangon International Airport, Nay Pyi Taw International Airport, Mandalay International Airport, and the Yangon Thilawa Port.

Between 30 March and 20 April, aid from the AHA Centre, China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia, Pakistan, Russia, Belarus, Laos, the Singapore Red Cross Society, Nepal, the UAE, Brunei, and Malaysia has been distributed promptly to the affected areas. These supplies include tents, tarpaulins, hygiene kits, kitchen sets, generators, sleeping bags, food, essential goods, household items, electrical appliances, medicines, medical supplies, and surgical equipment.

Aid designated for the Nay Pyi Taw Council Area was distributed according to the Council’s relief plan. Supplies for civil servant families in Nay Pyi Taw were delivered under the relevant ministries’ arrangements. Fifty-two vehicles transported aid to Mandalay Region via Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw, with additional items arriving directly at Mandalay (TadaU) International Airport and distributed under the Mandalay Region Government’s plan.

In Sagaing Region, 23 vehicles delivered aid, which is being distributed by the regional government, while seven vehicles transported supplies to southern Shan State, overseen by the Shan State Government. Medical and surgical supplies, including hospital equipment, have been transferred to the Ministry of Health for the treatment of the injured.

The attached tables detail the distribution of foreign-donated aid to victims in Shan State (South), Mandalay Region, Sagaing Region, and Nay Pyi Taw. Weekly updates will continue to report on the arrival of further international relief and its distribution to those affected by the earthquake.

KBZ Foundation launches K45B earthquake relief centre in Mandalay

THE KBZ Foundation is currently constructing a long-term support centre called KBZ Centre Mandalay to assist people affected by the recent earthquake. The centre is designed to provide rescue and support services for a period ranging from at least one year to up to five years. According to reports, the foundation’s chairman, U Aung Ko Win, has initially allocated K45 billion for the development of the centre.

KBZ Centre Mandalay will be equipped with a 24-hour call centre, an information and administration centre, medical and first aid points, doctor consultation rooms, meeting rooms, rest areas for doctors and nurses, ECG and ultrasound facilities, a blood collection room, a medication distribution room, and health education rooms. The centre aims to ensure uninterrupted access to clean water, electricity, food, and essential medicines for the public.

Additionally, the centre will include a minor surgery room, a mental health treatment room, four specialist clinics, and seven general treatment rooms, enabling it to provide free medical care to around 700 patients per day. For daily needs, two free dining halls capable of serving meals to about 140 people at a time will be available, along with public bathrooms for up to 24 users simultaneously, free toilet facilities, and temporary gas cooking stations.

The site will also feature parking spaces for 80 vehicles, designated areas for VIPs, emergency ambulances and motorbike parking. Construction is being carried out rapidly with the use of machinery and a large workforce to ensure swift completion.

It is worth noting that during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the KBZ Foundation’s Inya Centre became a trusted facility for patients and played a vital role in saving nearly 6,000 lives through treatment and care.

KBZ Foundation launches K45B earthquake relief centre in Mandalay

DPM Union Minister at Prime Minister’s Office visits temporary camps for staff families

Member of the State Administration Council Deputy Prime Minister Union Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Electricity and Energy Development Commission Chairman Admiral Tin Aung San yesterday inspected repair work of the office of State Administration Council, and temporary settlement of staff and families from the Ministry of Electric Power, the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of the Prime Minister’s Office damaged by the recent earthquake.

Officials reported the damage to the buildings in the earthquake and the ongoing process of repairing these buildings. The Admiral instructed officials to emphasize worksite safety in repairing operations and to repair the buildings under the SOP.

At Thabyay-1 hostels, Admiral Tin Aung San and Union Minister for Electric Power U Nyan Tun inspected repairs of buildings and accommodation for staff families. They also viewed the installation of a transformer to electrify the temporary camp for staff families at Danatheikdi sports ground in Zabuthiri Township, the construction of the temporary camp by (uab) Foundation and the supply of food and water.

The Ministry of Electric Power has arranged electrification for nine temporary camps for staff families in the Nay Pyi Taw Council Area.

A total of 560 electricians from Yangon, Bago and Magway regions have repaired power lines and power stations in the Nay Pyi Taw Council Area. So far, 99.7 per cent of the electricity supply resumes in Nay Pyi Taw, 99.98 per cent in Mandalay and 97 per cent in Sagaing.

The Admiral and Union Minister for Energy U Ko Ko Lwin viewed round the temporary camp for staff families of the Ministry of Energy at Gems Emporium Hall in Dekkhinathiri Township and presented foodstuffs to staff families.

The Admiral also looked into accommodation for staff families of the Ministry of the Prime Minister’s Office in Dekkhinathiri Township, comforted them and presented relief supplies.

Inlay PhaungdawOo restoration set for completion ahead of festival

THE square and main temple of the Inlay PhaungdawOo Pagoda, which was affected by the recent Mandalay earthquake, will be repaired before the upcoming Pagoda Festival, according to the Inlay Pagoda Board of Trustees.

The earthquake damaged several key structures, including the main temple, the pagoda square, the Karaweik-shaped barge, and the buildings where it is docked.

As a result, pilgrimages to the site have been temporarily suspended.

Restoration efforts are underway, with experts and workers carrying out repairs using donations collected from across the country, intending to finish it in time for this year's PhaungdawOo Pagoda Festival.

Visitor arrivals to beaches such as Ngwehsaung and Saleaintan, which are located within a short distance of Yangon and nearby resorts, also increased during Thingyan. As overseas trips, local visitors went to Thailand, Vietnam and Bodh Gaya.

Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja title offered to Presiding Nun Daw Sudhammavati (Thameechit) from Nepal

The State Administration Council offered religious titles to relevant recipients under Notification 1/2025 on 4 January.

On behalf of the government, Myanmar Ambassador to Nepal U Myo Myint Maung offered the Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja title to Presiding Nun of Dham Kirti Vihar, Nun Daw Sudhammavati (Thameechit) in Kathmandu, Nepal, yesterday.

The Myanmar ambassador explained the purpose of offering the title, while the Member of the Parliament of Nepal gave remarks.

The Ambassador, on behalf of the Myanmar government, offered the Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja title to Nun Daw Sudhammavati.

The Presiding Nun delivered a commemorative Dhamma discourse and donated NPR2.5 million and US$1,000 to Sitagu Sayadaw Ashin Nyanissara for the rehabilitation of quake-affected Sitagu International Buddhist Academy in Sagaing and other religious buildings through the Ambassador.

All congregations led by the Presiding Nun prayed for the people of Myanmar who lost their lives in the Mandalay Earthquake. Well-wishers and families from the Myanmar Embassy donated alms to the Presiding Nun.

The ceremony was attended by MPs of Nepal, embassy staff and families, members of the Vihara Board of Trustees, town elders and Buddhists from Nepal, totalling some 200.

The Presiding Nun is 92 now. The Myanmar government conferred the Aggamaha Ganthavacaka Pandita title on the Presiding Nun in 1992, the Nepali government, the Jnanmala Ratnavata Sirpaa title in 1995 and the Lumbini Buddhist University from Nepal, a D Litt (Honoris Causa) in 2024. This year, the government of the State Administration Council conferred Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja on the Nun.

The Presiding Nun is actively participating in the missionary work of Theravada Buddhism in Myanmar, Thailand, India, Japan, China, Cambodia, the United States of America and Sri Lanka.

KBZ Foundation launches K45B earthquake relief centre in Mandalay

THE KBZ Foundation is currently constructing a long-term support centre called KBZ Centre Mandalay to assist people affected by the recent earthquake. The centre is designed to provide rescue and support services for a period ranging from at least one year to up to five years. According to reports, the foundation’s chairman, U Aung Ko Win, has initially allocated K45 billion for the development of the centre.

Indonesia tops Myanmar’s rice import chart for FY2024-25

I NDONESIA is the leading importer of Myanmar’s rice with over 605,000 tonnes in the previous financial year 2024-2025 (from 1 April to 31 March), according to the Myanmar Rice Federation (MRF).

China is the second largest importer of Myanmar rice with over 516,000 tonnes, followed by 355,000 tonnes to Belgium, over 134,000 to the Philippines, 105,000 to Bangladesh, over 96,600 to Senegal, over 60,800 to Cote D’Ivoire, 57,200 to Poland, over 48,600 to Spain, over 44,200 to Mozambique, over 27,100 to Cameroon, 22,800 to the UK, 20,000 to the Netherlands, over 17,000 to Togo and over 16,100 to Italy.

Myanmar’s rice and broken rice exports hit over 2.48 million tonnes in the last FY 2024-2025, with an estimated value of $1.129 billion, statistics of the Myanmar Rice Federation (MRF) showed.

The federation aimed to achieve 2.5 million tonnes of rice exports in FY 2024-2025.

The Ministry of Commerce has been cooperating with departments and institutions concerned to achieve monthly export targets and beyond, depending on the supply volume of rice, broken rice, pulses, corn, rubber and fisheries from the respective companies.

The Ministry of Commerce is working together with the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Myanmar Rice Federation, Myanmar Pulses, Beans, Maize and Sesame Seeds Merchants Association, Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association, Myanmar Industries Association, Myanmar Rubber Planters and Producers Association, Myanmar Fisheries Products Processors and Exporters Association to meet monthly export targets and facilitate exports.

It was projected to achieve 2.5 million tonnes of rice export in the FY 2023- 2024 and to generate earnings of one billion dollars. However, rice exports fell short of the target with 1.6 million tonnes worth $845 million.

The Central Bank of Myanmar’s monetary policy to control export earnings impeded rice exports, hurting exporters financially. The El Nino weather condition also hampered rice export, the president of the Myanmar Rice Federation affirmed.

Myanmar exported 2,261,203 tonnes of rice and broken rice to foreign trade partners in the past 2022-2023 FY (AprilMarch), with an estimated value of $853.472 million.

Indonesia tops Myanmar’s rice import chart for FY2024-25

Cement imports keep flowing into Yangon

To quickly meet domestic cement demand for construction projects nationwide during the earthquake rehabilitation process in this dry season, and to bolster local production, cement imports are being permitted.

Continuously arriving via the Kawthoung border trade station, a cement vessel carrying 3,010 tonnes reached Shweme Port in Shwepyitha Township, Yangon Region, on the evening of 18 April and is now being distributed in the market.

The import of cement required for domestic construction work has been allowed during this period, and in addition to this vessel, other vessels carrying cement will continue to arrive weekly.

MoE prepares for upcoming academic year following earthquake impact

THE Ministry of Education says that efforts will be made to prepare universities, colleges, and basic education schools damaged by the Mandalay earthquake for the start of the 2025–2026 academic year.

To ensure preparedness, the government will systematically clear dangerous school buildings that have collapsed due to the earthquake as soon as possible. Damaged schools and buildings in the regions and states will be systematically categorized according to three criteria: minor repairs, major repairs, and new construction.

In addition, temporary classrooms and housing will be systematically provided in areas where schools need to reopen in early June. The Ministry of Education, along with education staff, teachers, and parents, will work together to ensure that all school-age children can continue their education in the coming academic year.

MoE prepares for upcoming academic year following earthquake impact

Mongphone Sayadaw, devotees launch donation tour for earthquake victims

THE Mongphone Sayadaw and a group of charitable donors will be carrying out donations in areas affected by the recent powerful earthquake, including Shan State, Nay Pyi Taw Council Area, Mandalay Region, and Sagaing Region.

To carry out these charitable acts, a motorcade consisting of 38 vehicles and 94 donors accompanying the Sayadaw departed from Mongphone on 19 April. This information was confirmed by one of the participating donors, U Aik La.

He said, “As part of the Sayadaw’s donation journey, over 2,000 pre-packed relief packages containing rice, cooking oil, instant noodles, and medicines will be donated to earthquake victims in Taunggyi, Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw, and Sagaing. The Sayadaw and his disciples also plan to disperse loving-kindness in each of these towns”

During the journey, the donation convoy will stop overnight in Mongpan, Taunggyi, and Mandalay. After donations are made in Mandalay, the group will continue to PyinOoLwin for an overnight stop.

From PyinOoLwin, the convoy will return to Mandalay before proceeding to Nay Pyi Taw, where donations will be made and an overnight stay is planned. The vehicles will then head to Yangon, where they will remain for around three days. During the Yangon visit, the Sayadaw will conduct loving-kindness sessions before returning to Taunggyi.

Maintaining parts of Bagan’s Meenyeingon Temple not damaged in Mandalay earthquake

THE Mandalay earthquake did not damage maintaining parts of Meenyeingon Temple located in Bagan cultural heritage zone.

It is No 1499 ancient building, south of the wall of ancient Bagan city. The one-storey temple, which is 130 feet high, has been identified as a grade-1 work in AD 12th Century. The temple is included in the maintenance list for phase II by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

A crack occurred at the southwest corner wall of the temple in the earthquake in 2016. So, officials monitor situation of the temple. After the Mandalay earthquake struck, officials of the Department of Archaeology and National Museum (Bagan Branch) checked the temple and found the original crack not larger.

Before undertaking the structural works by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the department installed the scaffolding to maintain the temple not to infiltration of rainwater and carry out consolidation of the mortar with the use of chemicals. Moreover, the department is working its functions with grouting at the crack with the use of pozzolan, pointing work and installation of three crack monitors under the preservation procedures.

The top of pyramidal spire was damaged by the Bagan earthquake in 1975. So, maintenance was carried out at the temple in 1976-78 and 2004-2005. Again, as the temple suffered impacts of the earthquake in 2016, maintenance was undertaken in 2017. Necessary maintenance was also conducted at the temple in 2020.

Quake-fundraising Myanmar-Thai Lethwei tournament postponed

THE Myanmar-Thai Lethwei match, with all proceeds aimed to donate to the Myanmar earthquake relief fund, has been postponed, the MFC Myanmar Lethwei Club announced.

It was originally scheduled to be held on 27 April, but due to the recent earthquake, fans, players and other general arrangements have been affected, so the match will be postponed for a few days, it said.

Main event will be set between Veenut, a fighter from Thailand with 50 wins, 25 losses and five draws, and Tun Min Aung, who has won a gold medal at the state tournament and is eligible to fight in One Championship after competing in Muay Thai in Thailand for three years. The fight is the first match for Tun Min Aung after a few years away from Lethwei, so it is attracting a lot of interest from fans, but the date has not been announced yet.

Earthquake rescue efforts see in hardest-hit areas

RESCUE and relief operations are actively carried out in affected areas where roads, bridges and buildings were damaged following the powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar on 28 March.

Tatmadaw members, Myanmar Police Force members, firefighters, international rescue teams, departmental staff, social welfare groups and locals are cooperating in these ongoing efforts.

Sagaing Region Chief Minister U Myat Kyaw, Lt-Gen Thet Pon of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) and officials visited several damaged sites in Sagaing, including religious buildings, schools and residential areas. They inspected ongoing rescue and coordinated support.

According to the Illegal Trade Eradication Leading Committee, effective measures are being taken in accordance with the law to prevent and take action against illegal trading activities.

The vehicles were found to be carrying five types of industrial goods and five types of consumer goods without any official documentation (estimated value of K79.738 million). Moreover, one Yutong bus, one Volvo tractor head, and one trailer (estimated value of K190 million), used for transporting the items, were also seized. Action is being taken in accordance with customs procedures.

Similarly, under the management of the Bago Region Illegal Trade Eradication Task Force, combined inspection teams carried out operations in Bago, Toungoo and Thayawady districts. As a result, illegal timber comprising 1.63 tonnes of teak, 1.178 tonnes of hardwood, and 0.648 tonne of other timber — with a total estimated value of K1.9 million — was seized. Legal action is being taken in accordance with the Forest Law.

In total, on 20 April, seven cases of illegal activity were recorded, with seizures amounting to an estimated value of K271.64 million.
