"Hey @ChrisVanHollen, I went ahead and changed your office plaque for you," Collins (R-Ga.) wrote Friday on X alongside a photo appearing to show the Democrat's plaque reflecting his constituency as "El Salvador."

It was immediately unclear Saturday if the sign was physically altered or if it was a photoshopped image.

The post comes after Van Hollen (D-Md.) visited the central American country to help accused MS-13 member and illegal migrant Kilmar Abrego-Garcia, whom the Trump administration recently deported.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday announced an Easter truce in the conflict in Ukraine starting this evening and lasting till midnight on Sunday.

The short-term ceasefire proposal from Russia comes as President Donald Trump has been pressing both Moscow and Kyiv to agree a truce, but has failed to extract any major concessions from the Kremlin.

“Today from 1800 (1500 GMT) to midnight Sunday (2100 GMT Sunday), the Russian side announces an Easter truce,” Putin said in televised comments, while meeting Russian chief of staff Valery Gerasimov.

Easter, a major holiday for Christians, is celebrated on Sunday.
“I order for this period to stop all military action,” Putin said, calling the truce “based on humanitarian reasons”.

The U.S. Supreme Court issued an early morning decision Saturday temporarily blocking President Donald Trump's efforts to deport illegal aliens-specifically Venezuelan nationals-using long-standing Alien Enemies Act of 1798 (AEA).

The far-left ACLU's case is currently under review by Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. After receiving a tip illegal aliens were being loaded onto buses for removal, ACLU rushed to U.S. Supreme Court seeking an emergency injunction to block the deportations.

While waiting for Fifth Circuit to act, Court issued an unsigned order siding with ACLU's appeal, temporarily halting removal of dozens of Venezuelans detained at Bluebonnet Detention Center in Texas.

ACLU's petition, filed on behalf of two Venezuelan men identified as A.A.R.P. and W.M.M., claims the government is violating a recent Supreme Court ruling in Trump V. J.G.G. (April 7, 2025), which mandated detainees receive adequate notice and a chance to challenge their removal under the AEA.

Ecuador is on maximum alert over an alleged assassination plot against recently reelected President Daniel Noboa, the government said on Saturday.

Noboa won the race in an April 13 runoff vote, but his main rival Luisa Gonzalez has accused him of committing “grotesque electoral fraud.”

A military intelligence report saying that assassins entering Ecuador from Mexico and other countries planned to carry out “terrorist attacks” against Noboa was leaked on social media this week.

“We strongly condemn and repudiate any intention against the life of the president of the Republic, state authorities or public officials,” Ecuador’s Ministry of Government said in a statement early Saturday.

“The state is on maximum alert,” it added.

The government accused “criminal structures in complicity with political sectors defeated at the polls” of hatching the plot, though it did not offer any specific names.

A second round of high-level talks between US and Iranian delegations on Tehran's nuclear program began in Rome on Saturday, amid tempered optimism about a diplomatic way forward.

Saturday's negotiations come a week after an initial round was held in the Omani capital Muscat. Although the talks are in Italy, Oman is again as mediator between the US team, led by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and the Iranian one, led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

State Farm, the insurance company most exposed to the recent wildfires in Los Angeles, announced Friday that it had agreed to pay out 65% of the value of personal property claims before requiring itemization.

The Florida State University dining manager and his boss who was in town for a visit were both killed when a gunman opened fire.

Aramark Collegiate Hospitality regional vice president Tiru Chabba and FSU dining coordinator Robert Morales were gunned down at the Tallahassee campus on Thursday.

FSU student Phoenix Ikner, 20, wounded six others in his rampage through the university before he was shot and arrested by police.

Chabba, 45, lived in Simpsonville, South Carolina, and managed the Southeast region for the division of Aramark that provides catering to college campuses.

He was visiting FSU for meetings with staff and university officials and in the wrong place at the wrong time when Ikner opened fire.

Chabba worked for Aramark for more than 25 years, working his way up to his high-level position in October 2022.

The Education Department announced Friday it was requesting records from Harvard University over allegations of inaccurate foreign financial disclosures, the latest in a series of administration moves against the prestigious school, which has refused to bow to White House demands.

The federal agency said the Ivy League’s foreign reports show “incomplete and inaccurate disclosures.”

The Department of Education wants Harvard to turn over a list of all gifts and grants from all foreign sources, information regarding all expelled foreign students since 2016, information regarding all faculty affiliated with or from a foreign country and those involved in the expulsion of foreign students, among other things.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) announced Thursday that his state would due the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) over cuts to the federal AmeriCorps volunteer program.

AmeriCorps was established by President Bill Clinton to provide volunteer opportunities on American soil (the Peace Corps, established under President John F. Kennedy, focuses on volunteer service abroad).

Elon Musk’s DOGE made cuts to the program this week, after half of AmeriCorps’ 600 employees had already accepted a voluntary severance package. Many volunteers across the nation were also let go from the agency.

Newsom claimed that AmeriCorps volunteers were essential to the response to recent California wildfires.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday signaled a potential end to the tit-for-tat tariff hikes between the U.S. and China that shocked markets, and that a deal over the fate of social media platform TikTok may have to wait.

"I don't want them to go higher because at a certain point you make it where people don't buy," Trump told reporters about tariffs at the White House.

"So, I may not want to go higher or I may not want to even go up to that level. I may want to go to less because you know you want people to buy and, at a certain point, people aren't gonna buy."

Moldova’s largest opposition party has accused the country’s government of “an unprecedented act of spiritual terror,” after a senior Moldovan Orthodox Church bishop was prevented from traveling to Jerusalem for an Easter ritual.

However, Bishop Marchel told TASS on Thursday that Moldovan police had stopped him and two clerics at the airport, conducted searches, and delayed them until 30 minutes after their flight had departed.

The Party of Socialists accused the government of “publicly humiliating” the senior cleric and demanded an apology.

“We consider the actions of [President] Maia Sandu’s regime a deliberate act of spiritual terror against the Moldovan Orthodox Church and hundreds of thousands of its parishioners,” the party said in a Telegram statement on Friday.

President Donald Trump said Thursday that China has been reaching out "a lot" ever since he nearly tripled U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports, and he suggested to reporters that the two nations could reach a deal in as soon as three to four weeks. 

During a gaggle with reporters after signing executive orders related to deregulating the seafood industry, Trump was asked about his ongoing negotiations with Chinese officials and, in particular, whether he has yet spoken to Chinese President Xi Jinping about the ongoing trade battle.

"They have reached out a number of times," Trump said, referring to high-level Chinese officials. When asked how frequently they've been in touch since last week - after Trump tripled his Chinese tariff increase from 54% to 145% - the president responded, "A lot."

A 30-day moratorium on striking Ukrainian energy infrastructure ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin last month has “expired”, Kremlin said Friday.

Russia announced the truce on March 18 following a call between Putin and US President Trump, but both Moscow and Kyiv accused each other of repeatedly breaking it.

“The month has indeed expired,” spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a briefing call, in response to a question by AFP.

“As of this time, there have been no other instructions from the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, President Putin.”

The short-lived moratorium was one of the commitments Trump wrangled from Russia in his attempt to broker a ceasefire in the three-year conflict.

Putin rejected a joint US-Ukrainian proposal for an unconditional and full ceasefire put to him before.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia was never serious about the moratorium and Moscow was continuing to strike Ukraine’s energy targets “despite Putin’s words”.

President Donald Trump Thursday announced formation of his new Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC), which will be led by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

The new council will be tasked with advising Trump on new policies related to the southern border, immigration and ending illegal flow of fentanyl into the country.

The new committee consists of: South Carolina GOP Gov. Henry McMaster, Fox News Mark Levin, conservative media personality Bo Dietl, and Republican National Committee Treasurer Joseph Gruters.

A federal grand jury in New York on Thursday returned a four-count indictment against alleged CEO killer Luigi Mangione that charges him with two counts of stalking, firearms offense and murder through the use of a firearm, a charge that makes him eligible for the death penalty if convicted.

Mangione is charged with stalking United Healthcare chief Brian Thompson outside the Hilton in Midtown Manhattan and then shooting him to death on Dec. 4, 2024.

Attorney General Pam Bondi has already signaled her intention to pursue the death penalty, which his lawyers are actively trying to stop.
