🟡The Yellow Kid debuted in 1895 in Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World, created by cartoonist Richard F. Outcault. It later moved to William Randolph Hearst’s New York Journal. It is often considered the first true American comic strip, using sequential panels, speech balloons and recurring characters—helping define the modern comic strip.

🟡The Yellow Kid was a bald, big-eared, barefoot boy in a yellow nightshirt, often commenting on city life with slang-filled dialogue printed on his shirt. The strip humorously depicted life in New York’s slums, satirising urban poverty, politics and immigration.

🟡The Yellow Kid was one of the first comic characters to be widely merchandised, appearing on toys, cigars (!) and other products. Though short-lived (ending around 1898), The Yellow Kid paved the way for future comic strips.

🌟 GRAMMAR: ABSOLUTE CONSTRUCTIONS

❗️ An absolute participial construction is a phrase that adds extra information to a sentence. It has a noun (or pronoun) and a participle (a verb form ending in -ing or -ed).

📌We can form absolute constructions with Participle I (-ing) or Participle II (-ed):
🔺The sun setting, we packed up our picnic.
🔺Her arms crossed, she waited impatiently.

📌Unlike "деепричастный оборот" in Russian, absolute constructions do not depend on the subject or predicate in the main clause.
🔺The match having ended, the fans left the stadium. (We would translate it into Russian with the word "когда").

📌Note that absolute constructions are separated from the main clause with a comma:
🔺His homework finished, he went out to play.

"The phrase 'hair of the dog' comes from an old folk remedy for rabies (бешенство). In medieval times, people believed that if someone was bitten by a rabid dog, they could be cured by applying a few hairs from the same dog to the wound. This belief was based on the saying 'like cures like'—the idea that the cause of a problem could also be its cure.

Over time, this idea extended to alcohol. People began using 'hair of the dog' to describe the practice of drinking a small amount of alcohol to ease a hangover (похмелье)—based on the (incorrect) notion that consuming more of what made you sick would help you recover.

Today, the phrase is purely figurative and is only used in the context of drinking. If someone says, 'You need a hair of the dog,' they mean having another drink will help cure your hangover—even though science suggests that’s not really the case!
