An internal 2018 email surfaced in Meta’s antitrust trial revealed Zuckerberg once floated spinning off Instagram to stop it from cannibalizing Facebook. He warned execs that promoting Instagram could trigger “network collapse” of Facebook — the more engaging and profitable platform.

He proposed branding both apps more closely under Facebook and building bridges like shared messaging and calling. Zuckerberg: "If engagement among [Facebook's] entire population is hollowed out, that may lead to significantly worse outcomes."
