What he did, he started these undertaking parlors all over the country that you could get members of your family buried for about five bucks apiece. You should see old Ossenburger. He probably just shoves them in a sack and dumps them in the river. Anyway, he gave Pencey a pile of dough, and they named our wing after him. 

The first football game of the year, he came up to school in this big goddam Cadillac, and we all had to stand up in the grandstand and give him a locomotive - that's a cheer. 

Then, the next morning, in chapel, he made a speech that lasted about ten hours. He started off with about fifty corny jokes, just to show us what a regular guy he was. Very big deal.
Then he started telling us how he was never ashamed, to get right down his knees and pray to God. He told us we should always pray to God - talk to Him and all - wherever we were. He told us we ought to think of Jesus as our buddy and all. He said he talked to Jesus all the time. Even when he was driving his car. That killed me.

I just see the big phony bastard shifting into first gear and asking Jesus to send him a few more stiffs.

Надо ли учить слова отдельно от контекста? 

И да, и нет. В каком смысле "да"? 
Вы берёте текст, читаете его. Если стоит задача активного чтения с полным пониманием, то вы переводите текст, а те слова, которые вы не знали, и смотрели их значение в словаре, надо выписать к себе в "словарик", чтобы заучить их значение уже отдельно от контекста и с примерами в других контекстах.

Для поиска других контекстов можно просто запустить поиск слова, и найдётся какой-то другой контекст с ним.

Со словами стоит возиться таким образом, потому что именно это и позволяет их лучше запоминать.

Когда учишь слова, стоит запоминать и все производные от этих слов, - это значительно увеличивает словарный запас. 

Например, хотим запомнить слово decision (решение) , почему бы заодно не запомнить слово decide (решать). 

Или учим 'frightening' (пугающий), запоминаем заодно frighten (пугать), frightened (напуганный). 

В такой работе с лексикой помогает словарь. Он всегда предлагает однокоренные слова из других частей речи. 

Можно не учить отдельно слова при чтении большого произведения, где может быть масса не ключевых слов, которые не препятствуют пониманию сюжета, которые можно не учить, если они понятны из контекста.

И всё же вы встретите и те слова, которые будут отвечать за понимание основного смысла. И всё равно их надо перевести и желательно запомнить.✍️

Зная как можно пользоваться герундием, можно легче находить варианты выражения мыслей.

Если помнить о том, какой частью предложения может быть герундий, можно легче находить способы выразить мысль. 

Например, герундий может быть 
1) подлежащим:

Smoking is a bad thing. 
Курение - плохая штука. 

Speaking fluently is a great skill. 
Умение бегло говорить — это отличный навык.

2) именной частью составного сказуемого:
His greatest pleasure is listening to music. 
Удовольствие для него - слушание музыки. 

My favourite hobby is knitting. 
Моё любимое занятие - вязание. 

3) дополнением:
I remember reading this book. 
Я помню, что читал эту книгу. 

4) герундий часто употребляется с предлогами:
On coming home, I met my friend there. 
Придя домой, я встретил своего друга там. 

After washing she went to the kitchen. 
После умывания она пошла на кухню.

Переведите:
Придя в кино, я встретила своего старого учителя.

После просмотра фильма мы прогулялись с ним по аллее парка. (park alley)

She ate the caviar and she ate the salmon. She talked of art and literature and music, and I was thinking about the bill. When the waiter brought my mutton chop, she said:
" I am sure it's a mistake to eat a heavy luncheon. If you eat just one thing you will feel much better. "

"I am going to eat one thing, " I said, as the waiter came again with a bill of fare.
"No, no, nothing else, " she said to him, "I never eat anything for luncheon. I never want more than that. I couldn't possibly eat anything more. But don't you have some asparagus? You know, I am travelling now, and I will be sorry to leave Paris if I don't try them."
My heart sank. I had seen asparagus in the chops, and I knew that they were awfully expensive. But I ordered them for her.
" Aren't you going to have any? " she asked.
"No, I never eat asparagus. "
"I know there are people who don't like them. "

We waited for asparagus I had ordered. I felt very unhappy. It was not a question now how much money I had till the end of the month. At that moment it wasn't important for me. But I wasn't sure that I could pay the bill at Foyot's.

The asparagus appeared. They were wonderful. When the woman finished her meal I asked her:
"Coffee? "
"Yes, just ice-cream and coffee, " she answered.
So I ordered coffee for me and an ice-cream and coffee for her.

" You know, there is one thing I absolutely believe in, " she said, as she ate the ice-cream. "One should always get up from a meal feeling one could eat a little more. "
" Are you still hungry? " I asked.
"Oh, no, I am not hungry; you see, I don't eat luncheon. I eat only twice a day. I have a cup of coffee in the morning and then dinner, but I never eat more than one thing for luncheon. I've told you. "
"Oh, I see! "

Then a terrible thing happened. As we were waiting for the coffee, the head waiter came up to us with a big basket of fresh peaches. But it was surely not a season for peaches. God knew what they cost. I knew too - a little later, for my guest took one from the basket.

"You see, my friend, " she said to me, "you've had a lot of meat and you can't eat any more. And I've had light meals and now I can enjoy a peach."

The bill came, and when I had paid it I found that I had very little money for a tip. When I walked out of the restaurant, I had the whole month before me and not a penny in my pocket.

"Follow my example, " she said as we shook hands, " and never eat more than one thing for lunch. "

"I'll do better than that, I answered. " I'll eat nothing for dinner tonight. "

But I have had my revenge at last. Not me, but gods didn't forgive her.
Now she weighs twenty one stone.

Хочу предложить вашему вниманию рассказ "Лёгкий обед" С. Моэма. Он забавный и стоит внимания особенно молодых и скромных людей, которые могут попасть в лапы к матерым хищницам, как мадам Х. 

The Luncheon

I caught her eye at the play, and in answer I went over during the interval, and sat down beside her. It was long since I had seen her and it was difficult for me to recognize her. She addressed me so:
" Well, it's many years since we first met. How time does fly! We haven't got any younger. Do you remember the first time I saw you? You invited me to luncheon. "

Did I remember? 
It was twenty years ago and I was living in Paris. I had a small apartment and very little money. She had read my book and written to me about it. I answered her and in some time she wrote to me again saying that next Thursday she was going to spend some time in Paris on her way to Luxembourg and to have a small luncheon at Foyot's with me. Foyot's is a comfortable restaurant at which French senators and famous artists eat. At that time I couldn't afford to have lunch there. But I was too young and couldn't say no to a woman. 

We met at Foyot's at half past twelve. She was not young, she was a woman of forty, and my first impression was that she had more teeth, white and large, than were necessary for any practical purpose. 

I was shocked when the waiter brought a bill of fare because the prices in it were far higher than I had thought. But she encouraged me:

"I never eat anything for luncheon, " she said. 
"Oh, don't say that! " - I answered with a smile. 
"I never eat more than one thing. I think people eat far too much nowadays. A little fish, perhaps. Have they got any salmon? "

Well it was early in the year for salmon and it was not on the bill of fare., but I asked the waiter about it. Yes, a beautiful salmon had just come in, it was the first they had had. I ordered it for my guest. 
"Would you like some meat? " the waiter asked her. 
"No", she answered, " I never eat more than one thing. But I would like caviar if you have it. "

My heart sank a little. I knew I couldn't afford caviar but I couldn't very well tell her that. So I told the waiter to bring caviar and the cheapest meal on the menu - a mutton chop - for me. 

" I think you are not right to eat meat, " she said.
Then came the question of drink.
"I never drink anything for luncheon, " she explained. " Except white wine. These French wines are so light."
"What would you like?" I asked.
"My doctor doesn't let me drink anything but champagne."
I think I got a little pale but I ordered half a bottle.
"What are you going to drink? " she asked.
"Water", I answered.

Lucy was very upset. She was sitting and looking at what five minutes ago was a beautiful vase - at three pieces of glass. She didn't believe her eyes. It was awful. Her boyfriend Dan and her colleagues Alex and Max were looking at her. They didn't know what to do. 

"Stop the train! " said Lucy finally. "I am going out! "
"Why are you going to leave? " asked Dan. 
"I have no present, " said Lucy. "People don't go to birthday parties without presents. "
"It's clear, " said Max. "And I know what to do. Brother Alex, do you have any money? "
"I do, " said Alex. 
"I also have some money, " said Max. "How much does this case cost? "

Lucy told the price, and Max continued:"Will you give me the address of the shop, and wait for me at the next station. Forget it. Go for a walk and relax. I am going to take a taxi and to return soon. 

At the next station three sad young men and one sad pretty girl went out of the train and stopped at the platform. It was a warm spring day. The weather was wonderful. The sun was shining and the sky was blue. Some people hurried to their country houses. Dan looked at his watch. It was ten past five. 

It was a beautiful place - but they didn't see any taxis. 
"Okay.I am going by train, " said Max. He gave Alex his heavy bag and left for Moscow. 
Lucy, Dan and Alex with a heavy bag in his hand went for a walk in the forest. Spring birds were singing on the trees, spring grass was fresh, and they were walking and speaking about Dan's new job, and about their plans for the next weekend. 

Suddenly they heard a funny music. It was Alex's mobile telephone. 
"Hello, " said Alex, "Yes, I am listening to you. - Yes, of course, we are on the way to you. - Yes, of course, we have the address - Yes, of course, we have a big bad with what you asked. Yes, of course, at six o'clock.
And of course, best wishes to Kate. See you soon. Bye! "
"Who is Kate? " asked Lucy when Alex finished. 
"She is my friend's bride, " said Alex. " He is going to marry her in August. Today it is her birthday. "
"But, she is my cousin, " said Lucy, and they started to laugh. 
Soon they decided to return to the station, but they lost their way.

Я обнаружила приложение Lingedia, которое, похоже, может в этом помочь.

Больше всего мне нравится, что в нём можно создавать свой список слов, который вы хотите освоить. Приложение будет предлагать слова из него периодически, пока вы как следует их не запомните.

Помимо этого есть возможность чтения статей, текстов, с функцией перевода незнакомых слов и внесения их в список для запоминания.

В меню также есть аудиозаписи, видеофильмы с возможностью выбора слов из субтитров для перевода и внесения с свой личный словарь.

Есть задания по собиранию разрозненных слов в предложения и некоторые другие возможности.

А можно вместо этого приложения просто записывать слова в тетрадку, открывать вечером перед сном и повторять.

Сказуемое должно согласовываться с подлежащим в числе.
Трудность могут представлять существительные, которые являются собирательными по смыслу, например, слова
family, crew, team, government.

Такие существительные могут рассматриваться как одно целое или могут иметься в виду отдельные члены группы.

Тогда и форма глагола, сочетающегося с этим существительным, будет в одном случае единственного числа, а в другом - множественного числа, при том, что существительное будет иметь одну и ту же форму. Например:

Чем темнее ягода, тем слаще сок.

🧑🏽‍✈️👩🏾‍💼Ещё говорят as black as berry, имея ввиду солнечный загар.

Такой ассоциации в русском языке нет. Загар в нашем языке не связан с цветом ягод. Мы скорее скажем шоколадный загар, а если чёрный, то как смоль или ворон.

Не знаю, откуда происходит такое "ягодное" сравнение в английском языке, но напрашивается ассоциация с  blackberry (ежевикой). Не могу утверждать, что так и есть.

Если кто-то знает, напишите.

🫐 А что касается выражения "the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice" 🧃, то мне понравилось мнение одной темнокожей девушки из просторов интернета на этот счёт, которая написала, "чем темнее кожа, тем больше страсти в любви".

Кажется, это верно😉

Мы смотрим на прокрастинацию как на страшного и непобедимого дракона в себе.

Пол Грехэм выделяет три типа прокрастинации:

• Тип А: бездействие (просто ничего не делаешь);
• Тип Б: «убегаешь» в мелкие дела;
• Тип В: занимаешься действительно крупными и важными проектами.

Какой ваш тип? 

Как я понимаю, деловые люди имеют третий тип (В), поэтому главное дело жизни у них все-таки движется вперёд, а мелочи жизни, вроде текущих обязанностей, как раз в числе откладываемых.

Я бы сказала, что это фактически расстановка приоритетов, при которой вы задвигаете менее значимые дела в число ожидаемых своей очереди (даже, если вы теряете на этом что-то: деньги, просрочиваете исполнение по счетам или ещё какую-нибудь текучку, да и Бог с ней), но зато главное дело вашей жизни НЕ ОТКЛАДЫВАЕТСЯ на вечное потом.
