Milwaukee County judge charged with obstruction, accused of helping man avoid ICE

A Milwaukee County Circuit Court judge is facing federal criminal charges after she allegedly attempted to help a man avoid arrest by immigration agents at the Milwaukee County Courthouse last week.

Judge Hannah Dugan was charged Friday with obstruction and with concealing an individual. She appeared in federal court Friday morning after being arrested at the Milwaukee County Courthouse at 8:30 a.m. She is accused of helping a man sought by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement evade arrest after a scheduled criminal hearing in her courtroom last week.

Migrants subject to removal from the U.S. under the contested Alien Enemies Act are getting about 12 hours to decide if they want to contest their removal, according to court documents unsealed Thursday — a window the government contends complies with a Supreme Court decision giving those detained under the act a "reasonable" time to appeal. Lawyers for people subject to removal say that's far too short a period.

"This is a dramatic turn in these cases," said Lee Gelernt, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union representing migrants. "They're not giving any information about how they should do it, how much time they would have to do it, and 12 hours is clearly insufficient for them to reach an attorney and decide what they want to do and how they should do it." Under the wartime act, the government has sent Venezuelans accused of belonging to the Tren de Aragua from the U.S. to El Salvador's prison known as CECOT.

Manhattan DA says attorney raped, electro-shocked, tortured women in his apartment

Manhattan authorities said an attorney raped, assaulted and methodically humiliated six women over five months in his Midtown apartment — at times using shock collars and electric cattle prods to torture them and recording the abuse with cameras throughout his home.

An indictment announced by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Thursday charged Ryan Hemphill, 43, with 116 counts for alleged offenses including rape, predatory sexual assault and facilitating a sex offense with a controlled substance. It alleged Hemphill drugged the women either by force or by tricking them into taking substances. It also said the women were unconscious or seriously impaired.

Highland Park shooter Robert Crimo III gets life in prison

Robert Crimo III, the admitted shooter in the Highland Park July 4 parade massacre, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Thursday, as a courtroom packed with survivors of the mass shooting looked on. Judge Victoria Rossetti ruled Crimo would serve seven life sentences, one after another. Rep. Harvey Weinstein is on trial, again. Opening arguments start Wednesday

Opening arguments are set to begin Wednesday in the New York trial of disgraced film executive Harvey Weinstein. Weinstein is charged with assaulting three women: a former production assistant along with an actress, both of whom testified against Weinstein in his 2020 trial, and an additional woman whose identity has not yet been made public. He is charged with two counts of criminal sexual act in the first degree, and one count of rape in the third degree.

Weinstein's 2020 New York conviction was overturned by an appeals court last year, which concluded that the jury should not have heard what is known under New York law as "Molineux evidence" — evidence from a number of witnesses alleging sexual misconduct that was not included in the indictment. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg then announced he would retry Weinstein with additional testimony from a new witness.

After a five-year hiatus, the U.S. Department of Education says it will begin resuming collections of defaulted student loans on May 5. Of the more than 42.7 million student loan borrowers in the U.S., who owe a collective $1.6 trillion, the department says that more than 5 million have not made a payment in the past year. That number is expected to grow as an additional 4 million borrowers are approaching default status.

The department said it will begin notifying borrowers who are in default via email over the next two weeks, urging them to make a payment or to enroll in a repayment plan, and referring them to a government website providing information on how to do so.

The Supreme Court on Saturday blocked, for now, the deportations of any Venezuelans held in northern Texas under an 18th century wartime law. In a brief order, the court directed the Trump administration not to remove Venezuelans held in the Bluebonnet Detention Center "until further order of this court."

Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented. The high court acted in an emergency appeal from the American Civil Liberties Union contending that immigration authorities appeared to be moving to restart removals under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798. The man suspected of setting fire to Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro's residence over the weekend while Shapiro and his family were asleep inside expressed anger over the ongoing Gaza War, authorities say.

According to several search warrant applications filed by the Pennsylvania State Police, Cody Balmer called 911 at 2:50 a.m. Sunday morning — about 50 minutes after the fire — and said Shapiro should know that Balmer "will not take part in his plans for what he wants to do to the Palestinian people."

A Maryland federal judge wants to find out if government officials are acting in "bad faith" in the case of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly sent to a notorious Salvadoran prison. Former film producer Harvey Weinstein is on trial for sex crimes, again. Jury selection begins on Tuesday in a lower Manhattan courtroom, where Weinstein, once one of the most powerful people in Hollywood, must answer charges that he sexually assaulted three different women. It is Weinstein's third trial in just over five years. In 2020, he was convicted of two felony sex crimes in New York. Two years later he was convicted of three counts in California.

Last year, an appeals court overturned Weinstein's New York conviction, concluding that the trial judge had improperly allowed the testimony of several witnesses who described alleged sexual misconduct that was not charged in the indictment. Weinstein's 23-year sentence was thereby voided. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said soon after that his office planned to retry Weinstein. In September, Bragg announced an additional grand jury indictment that wasn't included in previous cases.

Buen appeared in court in an orange jail suit on Monday morning with his attorneys as Judge Catherine Cheroutes handed down the sentence for criminally negligent homicide.  

“In my mind, this is about the homicide, that is and always was what this has been about — is Mr. Buen killed Christian Glass. And that deserves punishment,” Cheroutes said.

Intellectually disabled teen shot by Idaho police dies after being removed from life support

An autistic, nonverbal teenage boy who was shot repeatedly by Idaho police from the other side of a chain link fence while he was holding a knife died Saturday after being removed from life support, his family said.

Victor Perez, 17, who also had cerebral palsy, had been in a coma since the April 5 shooting, and tests Friday showed that he had no brain activity, his aunt, Ana Vazquez, told The Associated Press. He had undergone several surgeries, with doctors removing nine bullets and amputating his leg. Police in the southwest Idaho city of Pocatello responded to a 911 call reporting that an apparently intoxicated man with a knife was chasing someone in a yard. It turned out to be Perez, who was not intoxicated but walked with a staggered gait due to his disabilities, Vazquez said. His family members had been trying to get the large kitchen knife away from him.

The case, filed by the Federal Trade Commission, accuses Meta of unfairly blocked social media alternatives from making inroads, and it has the potential to force the California-based company to divest from Instagram and WhatsApp.

Federal judge orders USDA to unfreeze funds to Maine

A federal judge ordered the Trump administration to unfreeze federal funding that was allocated to Maine from the U.S. Department of Agriculture — funds that had been withheld following President Trump's clash with Maine Gov. Janet Mills over the issue of transgender athletes.

U.S. District Court Judge John Woodcock granted Maine's request for a temporary restraining order on Friday. The USDA is just one of the agencies where federal funding for Maine has been threatened. The agency did not immediately respond to request for a comment.

Smartphones and computers are now spared from Trump's reciprocal tariffs

The Trump administration has amended its list of imports that will be affected by sweeping global tariffs in order to exempt certain electronics, including smartphones and computers.

The updated guidance was published Friday night by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The exemption will apply to President Trump's steep "reciprocal tariffs" imposed across dozens of countries, which have since been paused until early July as well as the 145% levies currently in place on China. That was the only country excluded from the reciprocal tariff pause. The exemption is effective for products that entered the U.S. or left warehouses starting on April 5. The White House issued a presidential memo about the exemption on Saturday.

Pig kidney transplant fails after patient rejection

The world's longest-lasting pig organ transplant has failed, doctors announced Friday. Towana Looney, 53, of Gadsden, Ala., had her pig kidney removed on April 4, after her body rejected the genetically modified organ, according to NYU Langone Health in New York. The pig organ transplant, a landmark in the quest to develop alternatives to scarce human organs for transplantation, took place Nov. 25, 2024.

The kidney was still working well, but appeared to have been rejected because Looney had to reduce her antirejection medication due to an infection, according to the hospital. "Towana Looney's genetically engineered pig kidney functioned well for over four months, and she was able to enjoy life without dialysis for the first time in nine years," Dr. Robert Montgomery of NYU Langone Health, who performed the operation, said in a statement.

Beijing slaps 125% tariffs on U.S. goods in latest U.S.-China trade escalation

China retaliated Friday to higher U.S. tariffs, slapping 125% levies on U.S. goods, but signaled it would apply no further measures in the future.

"If the U.S. continues to increase tariffs on Chinese exports, China will not respond," China's Ministry of Finance said in a statement announcing the new levies, in a sign that Chinese authorities see no real upside to any further tit-for-tat measures beyond these. "Given the current level of tariffs, U.S. goods exported to China are no longer market-viable," the statement added by way of explanation.
