Originally used as a verb to describe the act of raiding, ‘Viking’ eventually became a term to describe the men taking part. Vikings were a group of seafaring warriors who set sail on expeditions to raid and colonise great parts of Europe.

Hailing largely from Scandinavian countries like Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, the raids were said to be triggered by overpopulation at home, and the opportunity to gain untold riches.

Vikings were masters of trade and travel
While perhaps best known as highly skilled warriors, Vikings also had a wealth of trade expertise on their side. They picked up a strong understanding of how to navigate the seas and use the ocean to their advantage, helping them reach civilisations that were previously out of reach. They came to understand the value of goods like furs, amber, and iron, and in return acquired valuable commodities like spices, silks, and precious metals. Eventually, their reach extended to areas as distant as Constantinople and Baghdad.

Vikings were incredibly hygienic
When you think of Vikings, the last thing you think about is good hygiene. After all, a group of murderous men huddling together on one boat doesn’t paint the cleanest picture. However, after exploring some Viking sites, historians were able to find primitive tweezers, razors, and combs made from animal bones. Historic accounts also indicate they bathed at least once a week, which is actually good by the standards of the time.

Vikings loved to ski
Before skiing became a great holiday activity in the present day, it used to be the go-to pastime for Vikings. Skiing became a convenient way to get around, a clever way to hunt, and a great source of entertainment.

🇬🇧 The story behind the infamous "4 Children for Sale"

In 1948, Lucille Chalifoux, the mother in the photo, was facing eviction from her apartment and, with no other options, made the difficult decision to sell her four children. The photo captured the attention of the public when it was published in the local newspaper. Offers of support and job opportunities poured in, but unfortunately, they were not enough to save the children from their challenging fate.

The youngest child, David, was adopted by Harry and Luella McDaniel, who provided him with a stable and safe home. While his upbringing was strict, he eventually found stability and served in the military for 20 years before working as a truck driver.

However, the older siblings, RaeAnn and Milton, had a much more harrowing experience. They were sold to a couple named John and Ruth Zoeteman, who treated them as property rather than children. They were chained up in a barn and subjected to physical and emotional abuse. RaeAnn, in particular, had a traumatic upbringing, including an incident of kidnapping, rape, and pregnancy in her teenage years.

Despite their hardships, both RaeAnn and Milton were able to reconnect as adults. Unfortunately, their sister Lana passed away before they could reunite. Another sibling, Sue Ellen, was in the late stages of lung disease at the time of the reunion but could express her love for her siblings through written communication.

Sue Ellen's words for the birth mother that sold them: "She needs to be in hell burning."

Grammar of the Invisible Court

In the theater of law, the words are not what they seem. Legal language wears the skin of plain English, but it speaks in a tongue all its own—precise, coded, and engineered for control. A “person” is not a man or a woman, but a legal fiction: an entity the system can recognize, tax, regulate, sue. To “understand” might sound like comprehension, but in court it can mean submission—to stand under the court’s jurisdiction. These aren’t poetic interpretations. They’re the terms as defined in legal dictionaries and enforced in proceedings.

This dialect is not ornamental. It’s operational. It shifts meaning quietly, relying on the layperson’s assumption that language is neutral. And because the changes are subtle, most never notice they’ve consented to something they didn’t actually agree to. The courtroom doesn’t need to deceive you—it just needs you to assume.

Legalese doesn’t obscure with complexity—it conceals through familiarity. Its strength lies in remaining unnoticed, in being spoken without question. Recognizing it is the first interruption.

Foi chamado de Universalis Cosmographia e foi feito por um cartógrafo alemão chamado Martin Waldseemüller. Seu objetivo? Jeremy Bentham’s panopticon was never just a prison design. It was a system. One central watchtower. Ringed cells. Light arranged so that every prisoner could be seen at any time—yet never know when they were being watched. He developed the idea in 1786, and published it in 1791. The brilliance wasn’t in surveillance. It was in the possibility of it.

That was the point. If people believed they were visible, they would police themselves. No chains needed. No guards shouting orders. Just the architecture of control, quietly doing its work. Later thinkers saw what Bentham had built. Foucault called it the model for modern power—not violent, but internalized. Discipline through constant visibility.

And long after the physical prisons changed, the logic remained. Today, the structure doesn’t need walls. Visibility is ambient. The tower is nowhere. But the design still works—because the feeling it creates hasn’t changed.

The Moche culture, also known as Mochica, was a pre-Columbian civilization that flourished on the northern coast of Peru between the second and seventh centuries AD, noted for its hydraulic engineering, ceramic art and social organization.

It developed in the Moche River valley, in the present-day Trujillo province, and spread to other coastal valleys in northern Peru.

Its peak was during the Early Intermediate Period, roughly between the 1st and 7th centuries AD.

They were great engineers, building irrigation canal systems to take advantage of the water of the Andean rivers in a desert area.

His ceramics are very characteristic, with figurative designs depicting scenes of everyday life, rituals and myths.

They had a hierarchical society, with an elite that controlled resources and religion.

Para sua surpresa, milhares de pessoas compartilhavam imagens, histórias e vestígios da existência de sua raça. Elas não o tratavam como uma lenda infantil, mas como parte de um passado real e fascinante.

Na região do Altiplano boliviano, perto das ruínas de Tiahuanaco, os anciãos contam sobre uma época muito antiga, quando uma raça de gigantes habitava a terra antes da chegada dos humanos comuns. Esses seres eram colossais, com força sobre-humana, e foram os construtores das primeiras estruturas de pedra da região, incluindo os enormes monólitos de Tiahuanaco e Puma Punku.

Apesar disso, o uso desleixado – até mesmo desonesto – de muitas dessas imagens na ciência popular raramente é questionado. Algumas práticas são preocupantes, como a edição excessiva de fotos, distorcendo seu significado ou omitindo dados essenciais, tudo em uma tentativa de atrair a atenção de um público já sobrecarregado visualmente.

Quand l’image trompe : la représentation controversée du Parc géologique de Zhangye (Chine)

Dans le domaine des sciences de la Terre, l'utilisation de photographies est un outil courant, aussi bien dans les recherches scientifiques que dans les travaux pratiques. Les images possèdent un grand pouvoir explicatif, mais ce pouvoir peut être illusoire si elles ne sont pas accompagnées d’un contexte approprié apportant des informations clés telles que les dimensions réelles, la composition des matériaux, les processus géologiques impliqués ou l’ancienneté des formations représentées.
Nous vivons à une époque saturée d’images. La disponibilité généralisée d’appareils pour les capturer, ainsi que la facilité de leur diffusion sur Internet, ont engendré un flux constant de photographies circulant sans contrôle. Malgré cela, l’utilisation peu rigoureuse — voire malhonnête — de nombreuses de ces images dans la vulgarisation scientifique est rarement remise en question. Certaines pratiques sont préoccupantes, telles que l’édition excessive de photos, la déformation de leur signification ou l’omission de données essentielles, le tout dans le but d’attirer l’attention d’un public déjà submergé visuellement.
L’un des exemples les plus frappants et regrettables de ce phénomène est le cas du Parc géologique de Zhangye, situé à une trentaine de kilomètres à l’ouest de la ville du même nom, dans le nord de la Chine. Les images les plus diffusées de ce site ont été notablement retouchées. Loin de chercher une amélioration pédagogique, ces altérations visent un impact visuel qui falsifie la réalité, en exagérant les couleurs vives des formations rocheuses. En comparant les versions authentiques avec les images retouchées, la différence est évidente et révèle une intention plus proche de la tromperie que de la diffusion scientifique fidèle.

Chamada de Ilha El Ojo, localizada no delta do Rio Paraná, tem um diâmetro de cerca de 120 metros e as águas onde está localizada são estranhamente frias, o que é incrívelmente raro na região!
Situada no segundo maior rio da América do Sul, no Delta do Paraná na província de Buenos Aires na Argentina. E que possui 4.880 quilômetros de extensão, atravessa três países como Brasil, Paraguai e Argentina.
Apesar de tantas pesquisas científicas suas estranhezas seguem desconhecidas.
Já a 2ª e 3ª fotos são de regiões da Amazônia brasileira as quais ainda carecem totalmente de estudos.

Excreta Mechanica, or the Anatomy of a Credible Lie

In 1739, Jacques de Vaucanson unveiled a mechanical duck that could eat, digest, and defecate. At least, that’s what the public believed. It flapped its wings, craned its neck, and pecked at grain with lifelike precision. Inside, a network of bellows, gears, and tubes imitated digestion. It was an automaton—but not a novelty.

Vaucanson was part of a larger current in Enlightenment thought: the idea that the body, even the soul, might be reducible to mechanism. The duck wasn’t built to entertain—it was built to provoke. If life could be imitated this closely, then what was life? And what separated man from machine?

Though later it was revealed that the digestion was an illusion—the excrement pre-loaded, not processed—the point remained. Vaucanson had built something that blurred the boundary, not just between nature and artifice, but between body and system. The duck worked because the world was ready to believe it could.

The Children Were Put on Trains and Sent Away

Between 1854 and 1929, an estimated 250,000 children were taken from cities like New York, Boston, and Chicago and sent west by rail. Most came from overcrowded orphanages, tenements, or the streets. Some had no parents. Others had parents who were poor, sick, or simply not consulted.

The program was called benevolent. Charities and religious groups said they were rescuing children—giving them a chance at fresh air, open land, and honest work. But records show how loosely it was managed. Children were displayed at depots and town halls, chosen by farmers and families, sometimes adopted, often used as labor. Siblings were separated. Names were changed. Paperwork was sparse.

Officially, it ended in 1929, but the scale remains staggering. A quarter of a million children moved like cargo across the country, many with no way back. It wasn’t called trafficking. It was called placement. And for decades, almost no one asked where they came from—or what became of them.

En 1936, Peter Fleming, hermano de Ian Fleming y un oficial de inteligencia británico, publicó News from Tartary, extractos de los que incluí en mi libro, Tesla & The Cabbage Patch Kids.

Su expedición de Beijing a Cachemira, atravesó directamente Asia Central, el corazón del imperio olvidado que alguna vez conocido como Tártary. En ese momento, la palabra "tartartary" ya había sido eliminada de los mapas convencionales y de la educación histórica, descartada como un término geográfico obsoleto. Pero Fleming eligió usarlo deliberadamente, evocando una región llena de misterio, leyenda y quizás, los restos enterrados de una civilización avanzada.

Para muchos su viaje no fue sólo un diario de viaje, fue una misión de reconocimiento bajo órdenes imperiales para investigar e informar sobre las ruinas, anomalías y el conocimiento esotérico que aún perduran en las sombras del Viejo Mundo.
