UPDATE🤣🔥: The government of El Salvador denied a request from Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) to see or speak to his Maryland constituent who was mistakenly deported there, the senator said during a visit to the country on Wednesday.

Van Hollen told reporters he asked El Salvador Vice President Félix Ulloa during a meeting Wednesday why Abrego Garcia is being held if U.S. courts and the government of El Salvador have found no evidence that he's a member of the MS-13 gang.

"His answer was that the Trump administration is paying El Salvador, the government of El Salvador to keep him at CECOT," the senator said, referring to the prison Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo. 🤥

Van Hollen said he asked to see Abrego Garcia or to speak to him on the phone to check on his condition.

The vice president told Van Hollen he needs to make earlier provisions to visit CECOT, the senator said. Asked if he could visit Abrego Garcia if he returns next week, the vice president said he can't make that promise, per Van Hollen. The Maryland senator asked to speak to Abrego Garcia on the phone, and Ulloa said he cannot arrange that but can try to do so if the American embassy asks. Van Hollen said he will ask the embassy to do so.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday said the White House will start interviewing candidates this fall to succeed Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, whose term ends in May 2026.

Bessent, speaking with Bloomberg TV during a visit to Argentina, said that would give the Trump administration about six months lead time before Powell leaves office. He gave no further details.

The files on King and Robert F. Kennedy will be released in the next 'few days,' Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said on Thursday.

She made her announcement at Trump's Cabinet meeting, updating him on his January 2025 executive order directing the declassification of records related to John F. Kennedy, RFK, and MLK Jr.

The King material could prove embarrassing for the civil right icon and are said to include unflattering details about his relationships with women that could tarnish his legacy.

The family put out a statement after Trump signed his order in January, objecting to the release.

China retaliated against Donald Trump’s latest tariffs by hiking duties on all US goods, while calling the administration’s actions a “joke” and saying it no longer considers them worth matching.

Beijing will raise tariffs on all US goods from 84% to 125% starting April 12, the Ministry of Finance said on Friday, after the White House clarified that levies on Chinese goods rose to 145% this year.

“Given that American goods are no longer marketable in China under the current tariff rates, if the US further raises tariffs on Chinese exports, China will disregard such measures,” according to the statement.

In a separate statement, the Commerce Ministry said Washington’s repeated use of excessively high tariffs has become little more than a numbers game — economically meaningless and revealing its use of tariffs as a tool for bullying and coercion. “It’s become a joke,” the ministry said.
