Dean Huijsen is not the only centre-back on Chelsea’s minds for this summer as they have a shortlist which also includes Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi and Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite.

But why Chelsea are pursuing another player in this position at all and what are the ramifications for those centre-backs at the club? 🤔

One of the factors behind Chelsea considering doing this is because of Wesley Fofana’s injury issues. He is still highly regarded at the club, but given he has started just 26 Premier League games since joining from Leicester City they have to factor in his injury record.

Levi Colwill:

Chelsea have ignored strong interest from clubs in the Premier League and abroad before. He is still being monitored by many teams. But sources insist the England international is not for sale.

Trevoh Chalobah:

Chalobah is going to be a different story because Chelsea tried to sell the academy graduate last summer.

He has played 27 times this season, so that will help Chelsea’s chances of receiving a decent permanent fee.

Axel Disasi:

Chelsea have said they would work together with Disasi to find a permanent transfer for him in the next window.

Renato Veiga:

With Colwill first choice at left-sided centre-back there, it means Chelsea are more likely to listen to offers for Veiga. Due to his rapid development at 21, the possibility of making a sizeable profit has further appeal.

Josh Acheampong:

There is no desire for him to go anywhere, even on loan. The 18-year-old is seen as someone that can provide cover at right-back & in midfield.

Benoit Badiashile:

He is another earmarked in the ‘stay’ category.

Tosin Adarabioyo:

There is a more of a question mark over Tosin and whether he is content with a back-up role, after just 13 starts for Chelsea following his free transfer from Fulham last summer. The 27-year-old is respected for being one of the few natural leaders in the dressing room.

Aaron Anselmino:

He will be loaned out next season and there is interest from Champions League and Europa League clubs.

Mamadou Sarr:

Chelsea are thinking about him staying on loan [at Strasbourg] a season.

After joining the development centre programme as an Under-9, Ted has progressed through the Academy ranks at Cobham.

He made his Under-18s debut while a schoolboy during the 2020/21 campaign and helped the Blues and England claim silverware across various age groups the following season.

Having earned further experience with the Under-18s, Ted made the step into senior football by spending the first half of the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Isthmian League Premier Division side Hashtag United, for whom he made 16 appearances.

“It was probably the most difficult win [of the season] and the reason why is because they all played yesterday, so for us it was a must-win game. 𝐎𝐅𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋: Ishe Samuels-Smith has signed a new contract at Chelsea until 2031. ✍️

Samuels-Smith joined the Blues in the summer of 2023 and quickly showcased his versatility, composure and leadership within the Academy set-up.

Last term, he helped the Under-18s win the Premier League South title and featured in the FA Youth Cup, but he predominantly played for the Under-21s as they reached the semi-finals of the Premier League 2 play-offs.

Samuels-Smith was also named in the senior match-day squad on four occasions across the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup during his debut campaign as a Blue.

This season, Samuels-Smith has become a fixture in the Under-21s backline. He has made 32 appearances across all competitions, primarily as a left-back but also at centre-back.

He has also captained the Under-21s on eight occasions and netted twice in Premier League 2 this term, the most recent of which came in the victory over Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.

There has again been senior involvement for Samuels-Smith, as he was included among the Chelsea substitutes for the FA Cup tie against Brighton and Hove Albion and was also on the bench for our Premier League win over Southampton in February.
