The 21st century challenge is to persuade students not to use AI while doing writing assignments. Persuade rather than threaten and punish if they do. It took me a while.

Last week we were writing essays. The first draft was on paper with a pen. However, the second draft was typing 🙈 to save my correcting time.

Why grammar 🤔? What was wrong with the way we were taught grammar?

I remember asking my teacher to explain the difference between Present perfect and Past simple usage. I was replied that I would learn about it in college, as this grammar wasn't taught at school.

Here comes the point. How can we teach grammar so that our students can learn it easily?

There is this listening task in Kid's Box 1 coursebook.
The students are introduced "can" and "can't". In the audio the characters are talking about who in their family can or cannot do stuff.
To make listening more focused, to help students concentrate on what they are hearing, I made a table in which they should put a tick or cross while listening. You can pause the audio to ease the task.

The International Motivation Session brought together top educators from around the world—to inspire, debate, discover, and share teaching methods that work!
“If you sleep too much, you’re practically dead. Wake up—and you’re alive!” I would say that Azmie's words became the symbol of the entire event. We talked about motivation, but more importantly, we felt it.

The highlights:
🔹 Teachers show up in a classroom every day, exhausted, but still with a spark in their eyes.
🔹 Stories of students from underprivileged backgrounds who, thanks to their teachers, found a way to a better future.
🔹 Discussions on why we do things we don’t enjoy… and how to find meaning in them.

⚡️ The Takeaway? Too many to count, but the main one—motivation is contagious. If you're surrounded by passionate people, you have no choice but to move forward.

Good morning! Let me share my yesterday's happy moment.

My 12-year-olds were studying vocabulary. The task was to practice new words in pairs. I chose not to be the strict teacher and allowed them to use Russian 🙈. One student will say a word in Russian, the other will translate into English (yes, that's bad, real bad), though I told them this is onetime activity, since...the weather was so nasty)))).

What made me over the moon happy is that two boys (the best in the world😎) started explaining the words in English 🥳🥳🥳 to each other! They themselves made the task more challenging. Isn't it the perfect example of INTRINSIC MOTIVATION we are trying to develop in our students?

⭐️ Project-based learning with teenage students ⭐️is a great option not only to boost their motivation, but also to give them time to get distracted from hard work. Let's face it, March is a tough month, we all feel worn-out, tired...
So, a project can make a difference!
This is what teachers should consider while assigning a project:

🩷 A meaningful topic.
Do you think your students would be interested in growing cabbage or in computer games?

❤️ Scaffolding at each phase of a project.
They have to be aware what to do and how to do it. Clear, simple instructions enhance their confidence.

🧡 Assistance at each phase.
A teacher should provide all the help they might need from ideas to just printing out pictures.

💛 Deadline.
Each phase must have a deadline.

💚 Presentation of the project.
They can present their projects either to their peers or to their parents.

🩵 Friendly competition.
The best project wins a prize.

💙 Feedback.
Give students a chance to reflect why their project was interesting, what they have done well and what can be improved next time.

💜 A teacher's praise.
Never forget to thank them for hard work they've done and to tell them that you appreciate their involvement and enthusiasm.

While cleaning my son's cupboard, I bumped into this pop-it toy. It's the alphabet learning tool, isn't it!
The game can be like this: a teacher says a letter to the students, they press it. Students can also play with each other.

I used this game to make students learn personality adjectives.
The class is divided into 2 groups-noughts and crosses.
One student from a group comes to the board and picks an adjective. The definition of the adjective must be explained to the rest of the group without naming the word. If they manage to guess the adjective, the student at the board puts a nought (or, a cross) in the correct square.

Teaching in the 21st Century: Balancing Tradition and Innovation

Reflecting on our session, I came up with a short summary.

🌹 Teaching English in the 21st century is no longer about textbooks and rote memorization. It’s about real communication, global collaboration, and adapting to the ever-changing needs of students. But while using technology and modern methodologies, we must not forget the traditions that have shaped us as educators. The best practice must be preserved and shared! 🌹
Expertise and relevance.

Besides, I also ask them if they hate the subject or the teacher 🫣🤭🫣🤭. Why not? If there are good and bad students, there must be good and bad teachers. A teacher and a student are two equal inseparable parts of a learning process, aren't they?
18.02.2025, 06:06
t.me/oldenglishteacher/480
The 4th category was
😖 the subjects I hate.

Think about it. Our children are not supposed to tell the truth as far as studying is concerned. They are supposed to be "good students" to be evaluated accordingly. How often do you think they are allowed to express their true feelings about school? However, they have feelings, attitudes, opinions.

One of the goals of a teacher is to create a classroom community where every member feels at home and knows that he is valued no matter what!

I am sure, hardly ever can they speak about what and why they hate about school with an adult, not peers. Just think how important it is for them to know that they can say something negative about school and they will be heard!

We were learning the names of school subjects.
We put them into 4 categories

😃 the subjects Iike

🙂 the subjects which are ok

🙁 the subjects I don't like

What do you think the 4th category is?
