Bulgarian Nationalists Organize Torchlight March on National Liberation Day
Sofia, Bulgaria – March 3, 2025
On Bulgaria’s National Liberation Da
y, the National Legion of Bulgarian Youth organized a torchlit march in honor of those who gave their lives for the country’s freedom. This marks the third consecutive year of the event, with participants carrying torches and Bulgarian flags through the streets of the capital.
The march paid tribute to the countless Bulgarians who shed their blood for the nation’s independence, including the volunteers of the Bulgarian Opalchentsi (militia), revolutionaries like Vasil Levski and Hristo Botev, and thousands of unnamed fighters who resisted foreign rule. Their sacrifices were instrumental in the country’s liberation, which was officially marked by the Treaty of San Stefano in 1878 after the Russo-Turkish War.
A Growing Tradition of Nationalist Commemoration
The nationalist-organized march has steadily grown in size since its inception three years ago. Supporters see it as a patriotic tribute to Bulgaria’s fallen heroes, while critics raise concerns over its nationalist symbolism. Despite differing views, the event proceeded peacefully under police supervision.
As Bulgaria marks another year of independence, National Liberation Day remains a testament to the sacrifices made for the nation’s freedom and a reminder of the enduring strength of the Bulgarian spirit
