🏆 A Skoltech student received an award for the best scientific paper

Peter Sychev, a master’s student in the Data Science program, has received the Best Paper Award at AINL 2025, an international conference on artificial intelligence and natural language processing held in Novosibirsk.

📝 Paper Title: "When an LLM is apprehensive about its answers — and when its uncertainty is justified"
🔗 arXiv: 2503.01688

What’s the research about?

The researchers tested whether large language models (like ChatGPT) can recognize when they’re wrong. To do this, they compared two different methods of assessing a model’s "confidence" in its answers.

In the first case, they looked at how evenly the model distributes probabilities across different answer options — if all choices seem almost equally likely, then it probably doesn't know the right one.
In the second, the model itself evaluates how well it answered.

It turned out that the first method works well for simple facts, but the second method helps only in easy tasks, and in more complex tasks it often "does not notice" errors.
The study also showed that even popular AI tests can hide biases, and reminded that when creating reliable AI systems, it is important to take into account not only the errors of the model itself, but also the peculiarities of the data on which it was trained.

🎉 Congratulations to Peter on his well-deserved award! Wishing him future scientific achievements!

🔭 Scientists from Skoltech together with scientists from the University of Graz, Kanzelhöhe Observatory, and Columbia University, have discovered how coronal holes launch fast solar wind streams into space at supersonic speeds. The study’s findings are published in Scientific Reports, Nature.

The research also delivers a major advance in space weather forecasting, extending prediction lead times from hours to days. Using a unique observational vantage point at the L5 Lagrange point (60° behind Earth in orbit), scientists can now better predict when these solar winds will reach Earth.

These findings will advance the fundamental understanding of the solar-terrestrial environment. They also underscore the importance of continued exploration from diverse vantage points. Such studies are necessary to fully reveal the mechanisms of the Sun’s influence on the Solar System, which will make a significant contribution to the development of heliophysics and space exploration.

“Imagine watering your garden with a hose,” explains lead author Associate Professor Tatiana Podladchikova, who heads the Engineering Center at Skoltech. “If you stand directly in front of the stream, you get hit hard. But if you’re off to the side, you only catch splashes. This ‘garden hose effect’ explains why satellites directly aligned with a solar wind stream measure higher speeds than those at an angle. Our study shows this effect is most pronounced for smaller coronal holes at higher solar latitudes, and depends strongly on the latitudinal separation between spacecraft. In contrast, larger coronal holes deliver solar wind more uniformly across the heliosphere”, -- said co-author of the paper, Skoltech Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Digital Engineering Tatiana Podladchikova.

🔭 Scientists from Skoltech together with colleagues from the University of Graz, Austria and the High Altitude Observatory of the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research developed a method based on neural networks that combines disparate observations of the Sun into a single model. The research results were published in the journal Nature Communications.

The new AI-based algorithm compares data from different instruments over decades. It transforms observations from one instrument to another, correcting for errors and recovering details. The neural network improves noisy, low-resolution data into clearer ones, preserving physically important features for analyzing the Sun’s evolution.

Using this method, scientists have combined 24 years of space-based observations, enhanced the resolution of full solar cycle images, reduced atmospheric noise, and even estimated magnetic fields on the far side of the Sun using only ultraviolet observations.

“Our work goes beyond enhancing old images — it’s about creating a universal language to study the Sun’s evolution across time. Thanks to Skoltech’s high-performance computing resources, we’ve trained AI models that uncover hidden connections in decades’ worth of solar data, revealing patterns across multiple solar cycles. Ultimately, we’re building a future where every observation, past or future, can speak the same scientific language”, — said co-author of the paper, Skoltech Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Digital Engineering Tatiana Podladchikova.

⚡️ Time to celebrate!

Alexander Tyurin, Assistant Professor at Skoltech AI Center and Head of a Research Group at AIRI Institute, has been named the laureate of the “AI Scientific Breakthrough of the Year” award at Data Fusion 2025.

The award, which includes a prize of 1 million rubles, was granted for a paper presented at NeurIPS 2024 in Vancouver. In this work, the authors explore decentralized asynchronous optimization—where system nodes operate independently without strict synchronization. They proposed optimal time complexity estimates that retain high accuracy while accelerating computations. This breakthrough opens up new possibilities for training large-scale neural networks and making more efficient use of distributed resources.

🧬 Skoltech scientists have shown how nanoparticles can change the properties of catalysts

A research team of the Energy Transition Center, Professor Alexander Kvashnin and Senior Research Scientist Ilya Chepkasov, together with colleagues studied how iridium and palladium nanoparticles can change their properties at high temperatures.

“The melting point of nanoparticles is significantly lower than that of bulk palladium or iridium. If the catalytic reaction takes place at high temperatures, the particles can melt — transform into an amorphous structure. Most of the research focuses on the properties of crystal structures. Our idea was to see how the properties of the catalyst would change if the particle went into an amorphous state,” said Senior Research Scientist Ilya Chepkasov.

🔬Scientists from Skoltech and their colleagues have refined the understanding of how plasma treatment of carbon-based electrodes affects the key characteristic of supercapacitors. The study was published in Electrochimica Acta and supported by the Russian Science Foundation.

Supercapacitors are energy storage devices often used in tandem with lithium-ion batteries in electric cars, trains, and port cranes, enabling nearly instantaneous energy consumption or storage. This makes them effective at starting and braking. They have a wide temperature range, suffer little wear and tear, and can extend battery lifetime.

Supercapacitors enable uninterruptible power supply for hospital, data center, and telecommunications equipment to ensure continuous service and avoid memory loss. The technology is also used to even out peak demand on the power grid. Supercapacitors have potential for Internet of Things sensors and communication devices, as well as wearable medical devices and portable electronics.

“Our team is investigating ways to improve the performance of devices known as supercapacitors by tinkering with the carbon-based material used in their electrodes,” the principal investigator of the study, Assistant Professor Stanislav Evlashin of Skoltech Materials, commented. “Basically, there are two ways to increase the amount of energy a supercapacitor stores. Either you enhance the effective surface area of the electrodes by intricate surface design or you introduce foreign atoms into the carbon material of the electrodes. In this study, we made an advance in understanding the effect of foreign atom inclusion.”

The scientist also described how plasma of six chemical compositions affects the capacitance of carbon nanowalls, a material used to make supercapacitor electrodes:

“We found that what happens first is that the amorphous carbon remaining after the growth of carbon nanowall structures is cleared away. This is followed by the formation of new defects and the incorporation of heteroatoms into the carbon material structure. Amorphous carbon, along with the heteroatoms of nitrogen, contributes to the occurrence of pseudocapacitance.”

📸 The photo shows unmodified carbon nanowalls as seen with a scanning electron microscope.

🆕 Skoltech researchers came upon a new explosive chemistry without a trace of nitrogen while examining compounds known as oxocarbons, or carbon oxides. In their study in Materials Today Energy, supported by a Russian Science Foundation grant, the scientists highlight dozens of unheard-of molecules, some of which hold over 75% of the explosive energy of TNT.

High-energy-density materials are compounds that can release a lot of chemical energy per unit mass (often by forming nitrogen gas N₂) and can therefore be used as propellants or explosives. Scientists study these materials in the hope of uncovering compounds that pack more energy than the traditional nitrogen-based explosives, such as TNT, and rocket fuels, such as ammonium perchlorate.

“There was this idea that since the bond energy in the carbon monoxide molecule CO is even somewhat greater, one could find a compound that decomposes into carbon monoxide plus something else, and that process would release even more energy. As it turned out, some carbon oxides that we studied release up to 81% as much energy as TNT when they decompose into products that include carbon dioxide, not carbon monoxide,” said Skoltech MSc student Elizaveta Vaneeva from the Materials Science program, the lead author of the study.

The principal investigator of the study, Distinguished Professor Artem R. Oganov, who heads the Material Discovery Laboratory at Skoltech, commented on the fundamental significance of the work:
“This molecular chemistry is unusual. You see, it is commonly held that molecules are understood better than crystals. But what we see is just the opposite. The variability of chemical compositions of crystals is very limited. Molecules, on the contrary, show great diversity. Still, even among molecules not every composition conceivable on paper will actually form in nature, and we have explained why and predicted a number of those that will likely be found.”

🆕 A research team from the Skoltech AI Center and Samara University have developed a system for automatically separating the stages of production processes from video streams. The research results are presented in the IEEE Access Q1 journal, one of the leading international platforms in the field of engineering and computer science.

“The introduction of such systems provides real savings: Now there’s no need to manually process hundreds of hours of videos to train a neural network to recognize production stages,” explains Maxim Aleshin, a leading machine learning engineer at the Skoltech AI Center. “The model will independently identify patterns in large volumes of raw material. This allows industrial cameras to detect deviations from the normal course of the process in real time and help prevent emergencies.”

According to Svetlana Illarionova, who heads a research group at the Skoltech AI Center, the technology will be part of broader solutions to ensure industrial safety and optimize production processes.

🆕 In a joint project between the Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry (Russian Academy of Sciences) and Skoltech, a research group led by RAS Academician Valentin Ananikov has developed a unique machine learning-based search engine for analyzing vast amounts of high-resolution mass spectrometry data. Machine learning allows exploring terabytes of accumulated data without new experiments. The algorithm accelerates the search for new compounds, reduces costs, and makes research more environmentally friendly. The article was published in the Nature Communications journal.

“Our work is based on an innovative algorithm combining machine learning and analysis of signal distribution in mass spectra, which has significantly reduced false positives when identifying chemical compounds. The new search algorithm has successfully verified historical data on the Mizoroki-Heck reaction and revealed not only already known, but also completely new chemical transformations, including a unique process of cross-combination that has not been previously documented in the scientific literature,” commented Valentin Ananikov, the scientific supervisor of the study.

🆕 Researchers from the Skoltech Laboratory for Metagenome Analysis, which is led by Assistant Professor Artem Isaev, and their colleagues from the United Kingdom have studied the BREX methyltransferase and determined the protein structure, which helped to program its specificity for DNA sites and significantly enhanced antiviral defense. The research, supported by a grant from the Russian Science Foundation, was published in Nature Communications.

“In our laboratory, we have been studying BREX since its discovery. This rather complex six-protein system is interesting because it combines classical DNA methylation with new antiviral mechanisms. In this study, we tried to find out how BREX distinguishes between self and non-self and what role the BrxX methyltransferase plays in this process. Our colleagues from Dmitry Gilyarov’s laboratory solved the structure of BrxX in a complex with a site-specific DNA substrate and found out how specific nucleotides in the BREX site are recognized. Using this knowledge, we were able to mutagenize BrxX and program it to recognize new DNA sites. Unexpectedly, this also significantly increased the antiviral activity of BREX,” says Alena Drobiazko, the study’s lead author and a Life Sciences PhD student at Skoltech.
“In our work, we also showed that BrxX is an essential element for both the methylation of bacterial DNA and the defense step. Interestingly, this protein, which was inactive in both in vitro and in vivo experiments, was functional after the assembly of a large BREX complex. [...] In our further research, we expect to find out how the BREX system decides between attacking or defending DNA and how the protection mechanism works,” says Mikhail Skutel, a co-author of the paper and a Life Sciences PhD student at Skoltech.
