Speaking Part 3, Learning Languages ⚡️

What are the difficulties of learning a new language?
I think it’s the grammar that challenges us more than anything. For example, in Uzbekistan, people speak Uzbek, and mostly they speak Russian as a second language, while learning English as a third language. All of these languages have different grammar, and it takes time to understand and separate those grammatical rules from each other until we start speaking fluently.

What difficulties do people face when learning a language?
Well, like I said, it’s grammar. But if I have to add, I would also mention pronunciation. In some languages, sounds are pronounced one way, and in other languages, they sound totally different. This phonetic element can be as much of a struggle as grammar. Sometimes, I guess, some people struggle more with pronunciation than with vocabulary or grammar.

Why do people learn foreign languages?
Reasons can vary, but for English, for example, it’s quite obvious. People learn English because they want to travel, find a job, or study abroad. I think it’s related to opportunities, which is good because learning a second or third language is scientifically proven to be beneficial.

Do you think learning a foreign language is important?
Yes, just like I mentioned a few seconds ago, it’s beneficial for our health, it’s beneficial for the brain, and it’s a source of opportunities. For example, I learned English quite a while ago, and these days I’m teaching the language, which means learning it helped me find a job that I can keep for years, make money, and help people at the same time.

Do you think the way people learn English today is the same as it was in the past?
As I remember, 20 years ago and even 10 years ago, we had limited resources. We mainly learned from books and articles. But these days, there are so many resources, including social media. Many people now learn English through social media and sometimes communicate with native speakers there, which I guess is fun and an interesting way to learn English. The variety of resources is the main difference, I believe.

Do you think it’s good that English is so popular around the world?
Probably, yes. I would say more yes than no. I’m sure some people believe it damages unique cultures and languages. Some even say that English is responsible for the death of many languages every year. But if you look at it from a more positive angle, you realize that English has made it possible for us to communicate in a more efficient way. I think the world has always needed one or two global languages to ensure people can communicate when they travel and to encourage learning a second language, which is a health benefit. So, yes, I mostly think it’s great that we are speaking English.
